What Changed for 2009:
  • Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free calling
  • Three new exterior colors
  • Standard OnStar 8.0
GMC characterizes the 2009 Envoy midsize SUV (whose twin is the Chevy TrailBlazer) as \"soldiering into the '09 model year,\" and consumers will find few changes of any consequence. Still, the Envoy does add Bluetooth wireless connectivity for hands-free calling (available with the OnStar 8.0 system) and three new exterior colors: Sand Beige Metallic, Quicksilver Metallic and Silver-Green Metallic. Again for 2009, the Envoy comes in 2-wheel drive (2WD) or 4-wheel drive (4WD), in Envoy and Envoy Denali models, and with an inline 6-cylinder engine or 5.3-liter V-8 engine capable of towing a boat or trailer.

Model Lineup
Just as in 2008, for 2009, the GMC Envoy is again available in three trim levels: SLE, SLT and Denali. Standard equipment includes air conditioning; dual-zone climate control; XM satellite radio; power windows and locks; 17-inch wheels and tires; and remote keyless entry. The Envoy SLT has standard leather seating and 18-inch wheels and tires. Denali trim adds specific design cues, including a chrome grille; standard, air-adjustable, load-leveling suspension system, which includes an onboard air compressor and inflator kit; available 20-inch, 6-spoke polished aluminum wheels; P245/60R18 all-season radial tires; and a locking rear differential. Options include 20-inch, 6-spoke polished aluminum wheels (on 2WD models); locking rear axle (on SLE and SLT models); power tilt and slide sunroof; Bose premium sound system; rear-seat DVD entertainment system; and a touch-screen navigation system.

Power for the 2009 GMC Envoy comes from two Vortec engines. The standard Envoy engine is a 4.2-liter, 24-valve, dual-overhead-cam (DOHC) inline 6-cylinder that generates 285 hp at 6000 rpm and 276 lb.-ft. of torque at 4600 rpm. The flagship 2009 GMC Envoy Denali has an all-aluminum, Vortec 5.3-liter V-8 engine with Active Fuel Management engine-cylinder deactivation that delivers 300 hp at 5300 rpm and 321 lb.-ft. of torque at 4000 rpm. This engine has a towing capability of up to 6600 pounds with 2WD models. Both engines are mated to an electronically controlled 4-speed automatic transmission. EPA fuel-economy estimates are 14 mpg city/20 mpg highway for the 4.2-liter inline-6 engine in 2WD and 4WD models. Envoy Denali with the 5.3-liter V-8 engine gets an EPA-estimated 15 mpg city/21 mpg highway (2WD) and 14 mpg city/20 mpg highway (4WD).

Electronic stability control with integrated traction control and 4-wheel low-drag front disc/rear drum brakes with 4-wheel anti-lock brakes (ABS) are standard on all 2009 GMC Envoy models. The Envoy Denali has a standard, air-adjustable load-leveling suspension system, including a locking rear differential. The locking axle is optional on Envoy SLE and SLT models.

The 2009 GMC Envoy safety features include standard dual-stage frontal air bags for driver and front passenger with the GM passenger-sensing system; standard head curtain side air bags for front and second-row outboard seating positions; 3-point safety belts in all seating positions; enhanced passenger seat belt reminder system; push-pull power window switches; LATCH (Lower Anchors and Tethers for CHildren) system for child safety seats; electronic stability control with traction control system; 4-wheel ABS; low-drag brakes; tire-pressure-monitoring system; daytime running lamps; theft-deterrent system; and OnStar 8.0 with the Advanced Crash Response system.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the GMC Envoy receives a 3-star rating in driver frontal and a 4-star rating for passenger frontal crash protection, and a 5-star rating in side-impact tests for front- and rear-seat occupants. In rollover testing, the Envoy receives a 3-star rating for 2WD and 4 stars for 4WD. These ratings are the same as the 2008 GMC Envoy models.

XM satellite radio and OnStar 8.0 are both standard on all 2009 GMC Envoy models. And, new for 2009, optional Bluetooth wireless connectivity enables hands-free calling. Optional technology features on the 2009 Envoy include a Bose premium sound system, touch-screen navigation, and a rear-seat DVD entertainment system.
