Overview
For 2008, the GMC Envoy (whose twin is the Chevy TrailBlazer) midsize SUV is mostly carryover. With a choice of rear-wheel drive (RWD) or 4-wheel drive (4WD) and an inline 6-cylinder engine capable of towing a boat or trailer, Envoy offers truck-based design with more luxurious interior appointments, according to GMC. For 2008, head curtain side air bags are available, as well as optional DVD entertainment, touch-screen navigation, sunroof and an upgraded speaker system.

Model Lineup
For 2008, the GMC Envoy comes in three trim levels: SLE (two versions),SLT and Envoy Denali. The SLE 3SA trim offers dual-zone manual climate-control air conditioning; roof-mounted black luggage rack side rails; power adjustable outside mirrors; deluxe cloth front bucket seats; leather-wrapped steering wheel; and 17-inch cast aluminum wheels. The SLE 3SB includes a custom overhead console; 8-way power deluxe cloth front bucket seats; universal home remote; and 17-inch polished aluminum wheels. The SLT 4SA adds dual-zone automatic climate control air conditioning; Bose premium audio system; driver convenience package; driver information center; heated seats; leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio controls; leather front bucket seats with power driver and passenger seat adjustors; theft-deterrent alarm system; and 18-inch high-polished forged aluminum wheels.

The Envoy Denali includes a Denali-specific honeycomb grille and front and rear fascias; heated, 8-way-power leather front bucket seats; Bose premium audio system; stability and traction control; rear load-leveling suspension system; luggage rack with center rails; and 18-inch, 6-spoke, high-polished aluminum wheels.

Available options on the 2008 GMC Envoy include a DVD entertainment system; leather reclining front bucket seats; sunroof; body-color grille with chrome accents; fog lamps; cargo convenience package; luggage rack with cross bars; and power, heated side-view mirrors with memory. Envoy Denali options include a DVD entertainment system; Denali-specific assist steps; splash guards; Sun and 6-disc package; power sunroof; and an AM/FM radio with CD and navigation system.

Powertrain
A 4.2-liter inline 6-cylinder engine with sequential fuel injection that produces 285 hp at 6000 rpm and 276 lb.-ft. of torque at 4600 rpm powers the 2008 Envoy. The Envoy Denali gets the Vortec 5.3-liter V-8 engine with active fuel management that delivers 300 hp at 5300 rpm and 321 lb.-ft. of torque at 4000 rpm. Both engines are mated to a 4-speed automatic transmission with electronically controlled overdrive. Stability control with traction control and 4-wheel anti-lock brakes (ABS) are standard. A heavy-duty locking rear differential is optional. EPA fuel economy estimates are 14 mpg city/20 mpg highway for the 2WD and 4WD models. Envoy Denali gets an EPA-estimated 14 mpg city/20 mpg highway (2WD) and 13 mpg city/19 mpg highway (4WD).

Safety
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the GMC Envoy receives a 3-star rating in driver frontal and a 4-star rating for passenger frontal crash protection, and a 5-star rating in side-impact tests for front and rear-seat occupants. In rollover testing, Envoy receives a 3-star rating for 2WD and 4 stars for 4WD.

Standard safety features on the 2008 GMC Envoy include dual front air bags with passenger-sensing system; head curtain side air bags for front and rear outboard seating positions; stability control with traction control system; 4-wheel ABS; tire-pressure-monitoring system; daytime running lamps; theft-deterrent system; and OnStar with one-year Safe & Sound plan.

Technology
All GMC Envoys for 2008 have a standard AM/FM stereo with CD player, radio data system, speed-compensated volume, theft-deterrent system, and 6 speakers. An AM/FM stereo with 6-cisc CD changer is optional, as well as an upgraded audio system with navigation. In addition, a Bose premium speaker system, and rear-seat DVD entertainment system are available. Rear audio controls, including headphone jacks, and XM satellite radio (3-months free) are also standard. A Sun and Sound package includes a power sunroof and Bose premium speaker system.
