What Changed for 2009:
  • Taurus X replaced Freestyle in Ford's lineup in 2008
  • Larger list of standard safety features for family protection
  • Three rows of seating
  • One-touch, flip-and-fold second-row seats and fold-down front passenger seat
  • Eddie Bauer trim level returns for 2009
Ford reworked its Freestyle crossover in 2008-and rebadged it as the Taurus X. The crossover utility vehicle, with a restyled exterior and new powertrain, takes cues from the traditional family station wagons (popular in the '50s and '60s) by offering plenty of passenger and cargo space. Standard seating is for 7, but Ford also offers a 6-passenger seating arrangement with second-row captain's chairs. The second- and third-row seats fold down to provide 85.2 cubic feet of cargo space. With the available folding front passenger seat, the 2009 Taurus X is capable of carrying items up to 9 feet long.

Model Lineup
The 2009 Ford Taurus X is offered in SEL, Eddie Bauer and Limited trim levels. Each is available with a choice between front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive (FWD and AWD). Standard features on the SEL include a trip computer; auto-dimming rearview mirror; AM/FM/CD player with auxiliary input jack; cruise control; fog lights; fold-flat passenger seat; second-row bucket seats; third-row stowable bench seat; plus 17-inch alloy wheels. Eddie Bauer models add dual-zone automatic climate control; two-tone leather trim seats and woodgrain touches; power driver and passenger seat; power-adjustable pedals; second-row adjustable bucket seats; second-row center console; third-row stowable split seat; AM/FM radio with 6-disc CD/MP3 changer; outside-temperature indicator; and the Sync voice-activated communications and entertainment system. These models also feature painted gold cladding and 18-inch aluminum wheels. Limited models are equipped with rear-obstacle detection; perforated leather trim heated front seats; driver's memory system; upgraded sound system; Ford's Sync infotainment system; and a reverse sensor. Options include a rear DVD entertainment system with 8-inch screen; Sirius satellite radio; iPod connectivity; navigation system; power moonroof; and a power-operated liftgate.

The 3.5-liter V-6 engine in the 2009 Ford Taurus X delivers 260 hp and 249 lb.-ft. of torque and is mated to a 6-speed automatic gearbox. The V-6 engine has earned a PZEV (partial zero-emission vehicle) rating by the EPA, which means it will meet emission requirements in states with tougher vehicle environmental standards (such as California). The 2009 Taurus X earned fuel-economy averages of 17 mpg city/24 mpg highway with FWD. The AWD variant averaged 15 mpg city/22 mpg highway in EPA tests. Ford provides a 5-year/60,000-mile powertrain warranty and roadside assistance program for Taurus X owners.

Every 2009 Ford Taurus X has dual front air bags, seat-mounted front side air bags, and side curtain air bags that cover all three seating rows. In addition, ABS, traction control and stability control are also standard. For 2009, Ford has added new reinforcements in the foot well area to provide better crash protection, the company says. The Ford Personal Safety System, featuring crash severity and seat-position sensors, is standard across the model range. For additional safety, there is also a post-crash emergency alert system. A reverse obstacle-sensing system is optional.

The Ford Taurus X received 5-star ratings (the Administration's highest rating) for all occupants in frontal and side-impact crash tests, and a 4-star rollover resistance rating in tests conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Although the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) hasn't completed tests on the 2009 model, the 2008 Taurus X was named a \"Top Safety Pick\" and earned \"Good\" scores (the Institute's top rating) in frontal- and side-impact crash tests.

Ford's electronic stability control system is standard equipment on the 2009 Taurus X. A feature desired by nearly 70 percent of car shoppers, according to Ford customer research, the stability system attempts to estimate the vehicle's path with several sensors which detect and measure oversteer and yaw. They do this by monitoring the crossover's speed, throttle position and steering-wheel angle. If the system detects wheel slip, or there is a loss of traction, the stability control system activates and reduces engine torque while applying braking to help keep the vehicle on the road.
