  • Two new colors: Magnetic and Tectonic

The 2015 Ford C-Max Hybrid and C-Max Energi are 5-passenger multi-purpose vehicles. They compete against several gasoline and hybrid models of similar purpose, including the Buick Encore, Fiat 500L, Kia Soul, Mazda 5, Mini Countryman, and Toyota Prius V.

Models and Features
Ford sells the C-Max Hybrid in SE and SEL trim levels, while the C-Max Energi is equipped with a single level of specification.

Upgrading to the C-Max Hybrid SEL provides leather seats, heated front seats, MyFord Touch infotainment system with satellite radio, keyless passive entry system with push-button starting, and ambient cabin lighting. This version is also equipped with a 10-way power driver's seat, auto-dimming rearview mirror, universal garage door opener, piano black interior trim, rear park-assist sensors, fog lights, and rain-sensing wipers.

The C-Max Energi is equipped like the C-Max Hybrid SEL but adds a bigger battery, an illuminated charging port, and a MyFord Mobile app for remote monitoring of the vehicle.

Under the Hood
A 2.0-liter, 4-cylinder gasoline engine is standard in the C-Max Hybrid, paired with an electric motor and a 1.4-kWh Lithium-ion battery to produce a combined 188 horsepower. Top speed running purely on electricity is 62 mph, according to Ford, but the C-Max hybrid can do that only for short distances and under certain driving conditions.

If you want to go faster and farther running purely on electricity, get the C-Max Energi. It has the same engine and electric motor, but swaps the Hybrid's battery out for a bigger 7.6-kWh Lithium-ion battery. So equipped, the C-Max Energi offers 19 miles of electric range at speeds up to 85 mph, Ford says. Note, however, that the larger battery pack reduces cargo space to some degree.

To recharge the C-Max Energi's battery, pop the power port door, plug the charger cable in, and then plug the other end of the charger cable into a household power outlet. After 7 hours, the C-Max Energi is ready to go. Alternatively, use a 240-volt quick charger to top an empty battery off in 2.5 hours.

Fuel Economy
Ford re-stated C-Max fuel-economy numbers halfway through the 2014 model year, and for 2015 the C-Max Hybrid gets 42 mpg in the city and 37 mpg on the highway. Choose the C-Max Energi and the EPA rates this model at 88 MPGe in combined driving and 38 mpg in combined driving when operated solely on the gasoline engine.

Safety and Technology
Ford's MyKey system is standard for the 2015 C-Max, allowing the owner to program various warnings and restrictions associated with vehicle speed, stereo volume, and seat belt usage, among others. The automaker's Sync Bluetooth connectivity with 911 Assist is also standard, springing into action in the event of a collision in order to speed rescuers to the scene.

Every C-Max is also equipped with SmartGauge instrumentation that includes an EcoGuide display. If the driver maximizes use of the regenerative braking system and is easy on the accelerator, the EcoGuide display grows a lush vine of green leaves in order to reward fuel-efficient driving behavior.

The C-Max can also be equipped with a hands-free power liftgate that opens when the user waves their foot under the rear bumper. The latest version of the MyFord Touch infotainment system is available for the C-Max Hybrid and standard for the C-Max Energi, in the latter model it includes a MyFord Mobile smartphone app that allows the owner to remotely monitor charge status, find charging stations, and perform other functions.
