What's New for 2014:
- Updated front passenger seat with armrest
- Granito Lucente and Nero Puro paint colors
- Turbocharged GQ Edition model
The 2014 Fiat 500c is a compact front-wheel-drive, 4-passenger convertible available in three trim levels, plus a new-for-2014 special-edition variant. Competitors include the Mini Cooper, Smart Fortwo Cabriolet, Volkswagen Beetle convertible, and to a lesser degree, the Mazda MX-5 Miata.
Models and Features
Serving as the lineup's entry-level model, the 2014 Fiat 500c Pop comes well appointed with features including heated power-adjustable outside mirrors, air conditioning, 6-speaker sound system with an auxiliary input jack and iPod compatibility, Bluetooth connectivity, height-adjustable driver's seat, 15-in. steel wheels, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel with integrated controls. All 500c models also feature a power-operated soft top with three settings, allowing drivers to open the roof just a bit to create a sunroof effect, a little more to shine the sun on both rows of passengers, or fully retracted with the canvas roof folded over the trunk.
While the Pop covers the basics, the 500c Lounge spices things up with extras such as fog lights, chrome trim, automatic climate control, a 276-watt premium sound system with satellite radio service, upgraded upholstery, and alloy wheels.
From there, the 2014 Fiat 500c Abarth takes a turn toward enhanced performance, as evidenced by its more powerful engine, retuned suspension, larger brake rotors, and standard 16-in. alloy wheels. Among the car's other enhancements are a rear spoiler, aluminum foot pedals, sport bucket seats, and a unique steering wheel.
In previous years, that's where the lineup would end, but, for 2014, Fiat has introduced the all-new 500c GQ Edition. Highlights include black and red alloy wheels, black-accented lights, black and white leather-wrapped steering wheel, and Alcantara seat inserts. Four exterior paint colors are offered: Nero Puro, Argento, Granito Lucente, and Bianco.
Options and Packages
As one might expect, the 2014 Fiat 500c can be upgraded with a variety of factory upgrades, with one of the more notable items being a Beats Premium Audio package boasting 8 speakers that produce 368 watts of sound. There's also a Leather Luxury package with heated front seats, rear park-assist sensors, and an auto-dimming rearview mirror, as well as a separate navigation system and a Mopar Electronics package featuring in-car Wi-Fi.
Under the Hood
Like their hardtop counterparts, the 2014 Fiat 500c Pop and Lounge models are equipped with a 1.4-liter 4-cylinder engine that delivers 101 horsepower and 98 lb.-ft. of torque to the front wheels. A 5-speed manual gearbox is standard, as is a sport mode that improves throttle response. For drivers not fond of shifting their own gears, a 6-speed automatic transmission is offered.
That same 4-cylinder engine is also at the heart of the Abarth and GQ Edition, though with the help of an added turbocharger, output has been increased to 160 horsepower and 170 lb.-ft. of torque. The 5-speed manual is the only available transmission. According to Fiat, these more potent models can hit 60 mph in about 7 seconds.
According to EPA fuel-economy estimates, the standard Pop and Lounge variants with the manual transmission are the most fuel efficient among 500c models, with ratings of 31 mpg in the city and 40 mpg on the highway. Buyers who opt for the 6-speed automatic transmission will see those figures drop significantly to 27 mpg and 34 mpg, respectively. Abarth and GQ Edition models match that 34 mpg rating, and are expected to achieve 28 mpg around town.
Regardless of powertrain, Fiat recommends filling the 500c's gas tank with premium fuel.
Safety and Ratings
As this overview is written, neither the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) nor the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has rated the crashworthiness of the 2014 Fiat 500c.
In an effort to ace those tests and protect passengers, Fiat fits every 500c with 4-wheel anti-lock disc brakes with brake assist, front active head restraints, and 7 air bags.
