Overview

What's New for 2014:
  • New interior and exterior colors
  • Redesigned wheels
  • Revised front passenger seat

Introduction
Cute and commuter-friendly, the 2014 Fiat 500 is a front-wheel-drive, 4-passenger, 2-door hatchback available in trim levels ranging from the basic Pop to the powerful and aggressive Abarth. Competitors include the Mini Cooper, Ford Fiesta, Chevrolet Sonic, Hyundai Accent hatchback, Mazda 2, Scion iQ, and the Toyota Yaris.

Models and Features
As noted above, the 2014 Fiat 500 lineup starts with the Pop, an entry-level model equipped with heated power-adjustable outside mirrors, 6-speaker audio system with iPod compatibility, air conditioning, Bluetooth connectivity, and basic 15-inch steel wheels.

Buyers who want a bit more than the Pop has to offer may want to consider the 2014 Fiat 500 Sport, a variant that earns its name with a retuned exhaust, honeycomb grille, unique front and rear bumpers, fog lights, more aggressively bolstered front seats, special interior trim details, 16-inch alloy wheels, and red brake calipers. The Sport is also host to a performance-tuned suspension and standard 276-watt premium sound system.

Unlike the Sport, the 500 Lounge attempts to cater to the creature-comforts side of the trim spectrum with amenities including a fixed glass roof, automatic climate control, satellite radio, upgraded cloth upholstery, and additional chrome accents. An available 500 Turbo model boasts extra power under its hood, as well as distinct styling, silver stitching on the seats, sport steering wheel, and upgraded brakes.

Situated at the top of the lineup, and geared toward the enthusiast crowd, is the 2014 Fiat 500 Abarth hatchback. This model packs an even greater horsepower punch, and also features a distinctive exhaust, body styling, two-tone interior, aluminum foot pedals, and an Abarth-specific steering wheel wrapped in perforated leather.

Options and Packages
Depending on which trim level is selected, the 2014 Fiat 500 can be upgraded with items ranging from high-grade leather upholstery and in-car Wi-Fi connectivity to Mopar-branded rear spoilers, mirrors caps, and door sills. There's also a luxury package that includes items such as heated front seats and rear park-assist sensors, and a Beats Premium Audio package comprised of a 368-watt amplifier and 8-inch subwoofer.

Under the Hood
Demonstrating a focus on efficiency rather than performance, the 500's base 1.4-liter 4-cylinder engine produces 101 horsepower and 98 lb.-ft. of torque, meager output that's managed by a 5-speed manual or 6-speed automatic transmission.

As its name suggests, the 2014 Fiat 500 Turbo model is equipped with a turbocharged engine. It's essentially a boosted version of the base 1.4-liter engine, one that generates 135 horsepower and 150 lb.-ft. of torque. The only available gearbox is a 5-speed manual with a different final drive ratio than the base unit. This powertrain is also at the heart of the 500 Abarth, though it has been tweaked to generate 160 horsepower and 170 lb.-ft. of torque.

Fuel Economy
EPA fuel-economy estimates for the 2014 Fiat 500 are:
  • 500 with 4-cylinder engine and 5-speed manual transmission: 31/40/34 mpg (city/highway/combined)
  • 500 with 4-cylinder engine and 6-speed automatic transmission: 27/34/30 mpg
  • 500 with turbocharged 4-cylinder engine and 5-speed manual transmission: 28/34/30 mpg
  • 500 Abarth with turbocharged 4-cylinder engine and 5-speed manual transmission: 28/34/30 mpg

Safety and Ratings
In crash tests conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the 2014 Fiat 500 received an overall rating of 4 (out of 5) stars. In tests conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), the 2014 Fiat 500 received a \"Good\" rating--the Institute's highest--for moderate frontal-offset crash protection.

Standard safety equipment found on all 2014 Fiat 500s includes 4-wheel anti-lock disc brakes with brake assist and electronic brake-force distribution, stability control, 7 air bags, and front active head restraints.
