What Changed for 2008:
  • New mid-line SXT model

  • 4-wheel drive (4WD) SLT and Laramie models get electric-shift transfer case

  • Tire-pressure monitor standard on all models with less than 10,000-pound GVWR

  • Dark maple burl woodgrain trim on Laramie models
The 2008 line of heavy-duty Dodge Ram pickups maintains the rugged big-rig style that first revolutionized Dodge's presence in this segment back in 1994. Compared to the half-ton Ram 1500 series, the three-quarter-ton Ram 2500 and Ram 3500 models have beefier components and engines for tougher hauling and towing tasks. Heavy-duty Ram pickups come in 2-door regular cab, 4-door Quad Cab, and stretched 4-door Mega Cab body styles. The Mega Cab, which was introduced in 2006, adds 22 inches of cabin length and features rear seats that can recline up to 37 degrees. Regular cabs have seating for 3, while Quad Cabs and Mega Cabs have seating for up to 6. Two cargo-bed lengths-75 and 96 inches-are offered. All Ram 2500 and short-box Quad Cab Ram 3500 models come with standard rear wheels, while all other Ram 3500s have duallie rear wheels.

Power comes from either Dodge's 5.7-liter Hemi V-8 engine or a 6.7-liter Cummins Turbo Diesel engine. Both rear-wheel-drive and 4WD configurations are available. Properly equipped, a Ram 2500 can tote up to 3230 pounds of payload and tow up to 13,700 pounds, while a Ram 3500 can haul up to 5110 pounds of payload and tow up to 16,850 pounds.

Model Lineup
Trim levels on the 2008 Dodge Ram HD consist of the ST, new SXT, SLT, top-line Laramie, and TRX4 Off-Road. Available for 2500 models is the off-road oriented Power Wagon. Standard features on ST include air conditioning; 40/20/40 split front bench seat; YES Essentials cloth upholstery that Dodge says is stain-, odor- and static-resistant; 4-speaker AM/FM/CD stereo; cruise control; tilt steering column; trailer wiring harness; and LT245/70R17 on-/off-road tires on steel wheels. SXT models add cruise control; power windows and locks; heated power mirrors; and remote keyless entry. SLT models get Sirius satellite radio with one-year subscription; overhead console with trip computer and temperature readout; sliding rear window; and LT265/70R17 all-season tires on aluminum wheels. TRX4 models have tow hooks, skid plates, fog lights and a limited-slip differential. Standard on Laramie models are dual-zone manual climate control; leather upholstery; heated, 6-way power adjustable front seats; front center seat cushion storage; power adjustable pedals; auto-dimming rearview mirror; chromed aluminum wheels; Infinity 7-speaker sound system; leather-wrapped steering-wheel with audio controls; Dodge's UConnect hands-free cell phone link; power sliding rear window; and fog lights. The Power Wagon has a taller axle ratio; LT285/70R17 all-terrain tires; a trailer towing package; fender flares; electronic disconnecting front stabilizer bar; electric locking front and rear differentials; electric winch; and skid plates. Options include a sunroof, front bucket seats, rear DVD entertainment, a navigation system, a towing package, and remote engine starting.

Heavy-duty Dodge Rams come with a choice of two engines and manual or automatic transmissions for 2008. Standard is the gasoline-powered 5.7-liter Hemi V-8 engine, delivering 345 hp (330 hp in 3500s) and 375 lb.-ft. of torque. Dodge says more than 80 percent of Ram 2500 and 3500 buyers will choose the available 6.7-liter Cummins Turbo Diesel High Output engine that delivers 350 hp. Both engines come standard with a 6-speed manual transmission. The 5.7-liter V-8 engine is available with a 5-speed automatic transmission and the diesel engine is offered with an optional 6-speed automatic transmission. The diesel engine's torque rating is 650 lb.-ft. with the automatic transmission and 610 lb.-ft. with the manual transmission. With the diesel engine, the Ram meets 2010 truck emissions standards in all 50 states. The Cummins diesel engine also features a life-to-major-overhaul interval of 350,000 miles and standard-duty oil-change intervals of 7500 miles. The 4WD is a part-time system that should not be driven on dry pavement, but has low-range gearing.

Standard safety features on the 2008 Dodge Ram HD consist of dual front air bags; a tire-pressure monitor; and 4-wheel anti-lock brakes with electronic brake-force distribution (EBD). Head-protecting curtain side air bags are optional on all models. As of this writing, the Ram 2500 and Ram 3500 have not been crash tested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) or the Insurance Institite for Highway Safety (IIHS).

Dodge's UConnect hands-free communications system uses Bluetooth technology to provide voice-controlled wireless communication between on-board cell phones and an integrated receiver. Bluetooth uses low-power radio communications to link devices over short distances. Multiple Bluetooth-enabled phones can be paired to the system, but one phone, typically that of the main driver, is chosen as the system's main phone.
