The 2014 Chrysler 200 is a midsize car offered in convertible and sedan body styles. The 200 Sedan competes against a long list of large compact cars and smaller midsize cars, from the Hyundai Elantra, which is technically a midsize vehicle by EPA standards, to the redesigned Mazda 6.
The 2014 Chrysler 200 Convertible is the most affordable convertible model that can comfortably hold four adults. Its closest possible competitors would include the Volkswagen Eos and the Nissan Murano CrossCabriolet.
Models and Features
For 2014, Chrysler pares down the 200 Sedan lineup, eliminating the range-topping S trim level and turning it into an option package for the mid-grade Touring and top Limited trim levels. The base version of the car, the 200 LX Sedan, continues to anchor the lineup. The Chrysler 200 Convertible lineup continues unchanged, offered in Touring, Limited, and S trim levels.
As buyers move up the trim level ladder, the Touring supplies automatic climate control, a more robust audio system, programmable garage door opener, upgraded trim, aluminum wheels, and more. For leather seats, there is the Limited version, which also comes with a premium sound system, remote engine starting, extra chrome trim, and fog lights.
For the 200 Convertible, Limited trim also includes a Uconnect touch-screen infotainment system and polished wheels. The 200 S Convertible adds interior and exterior cosmetic enhancements designed to make the car look sporty.
Options and Packages
Aside from Bluetooth and a Smoker's package, the 200 LX Sedan is bereft of factory options. Choose the 200 Touring and Chrysler offers a V-6 engine, Uconnect touch-screen infotainment system, power sunroof, heated front seats, and remote engine starting. Plus, this version can be upgraded with an S package or a Super S package, each of which adds cosmetic enhancements to make the car look sporty. Limited trim can also be treated to the S or Super S option groups, plus a navigation system.
The 200 LX Convertible is available with a V-6 engine, Uconnect touch-screen technology, remote engine starting, heated front seats, wind blocker, and 18-inch aluminum wheels. The Limited version can be optioned with a power-retractable hardtop, navigation system, and a premium sound system. The S trim level is offered with the power hardtop and navigation. Everything else is standard.
Chrysler offers cloth seats as a no-charge option for the Limited Sedan and Limited Convertible, which come with leather seating standard.
Under the Hood
A 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine is standard for the LX Sedan and the Touring versions of both body styles. It makes 173 horsepower and has a 4-speed automatic transmission in the LX Sedan. Touring versions have a more fuel-efficient 6-speed automatic transmission.
Optional for the 200 Touring and standard for the 200 Limited models and the S Convertible, a 3.6-liter V-6 engine generates 283 horsepower, and a 6-speed automatic transmission drives the front wheels.
Chrysler 200 Sedans equipped with a 4-cylinder engine are rated by the EPA to get 20 mpg in the city and up to 31 mpg on the highway, depending on whether they have the 4-speed automatic or the 6-speed automatic. In the 200 Convertible, the 4-cylinder engine is rated by the EPA 18 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway.
Regardless of body style, if you select a V-6 engine, the EPA ratings are 19 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway. Note that the V-6 is actually more fuel-efficient than the 4-cylinder, as applied to the 200 Convertible.
Safety Ratings and Technology
The Chrysler 200 is an older design, and beyond the basic equipment mandated by the federal government, lacks advanced safety features.
Nevertheless, from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) the 2014 200 Sedan receives its highest-possible rating of \"Top Safety Pick +.\" The 2014 200 Convertible receives the highest rating of \"Good\" in the moderate offset frontal-impact test, side-impact test, and the rear-impact injury prevention test.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) does not rate the 2014 200 Sedan as highly. Though the 200 Sedan receives an overall score of 4 stars (out of 5 stars) from the NHTSA, it receives only 3 stars for side-impact crash protection, due in large part to the model receiving a 1-star rating in the side-impact pole test. The NHTSA has not assessed the 2014 200 Convertible's crash-test performance as this overview is written.
