Introduction
The 2014 Chevrolet Volt is a 4-passenger, front-wheel-drive (FWD) 4-door hatchback featuring a plug-in hybrid powertrain with what Chevrolet estimates to be a 38-mile driving range. Competitors include the Ford C-Max Energi Plug-in Hybrid, Ford Fusion Energi Plug-in Hybrid, Honda Accord Plug-in Hybrid, Nissan Leaf, and the Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid.

Models and Features
Chevy offers the 2014 Volt in one well-appointed trim level outfitted with a standard 7-in. touch-screen infotainment system, as well as Bluetooth connectivity and streaming audio, leather-wrapped steering wheel, complimentary 3-month satellite radio subscription including travel information, push-button start, remote start, 17-in. alloy wheels, and heated mirrors.

Options and Packages
Buyers who want to upgrade their 2014 Volt have their choice of several individual items and packages, among which are a navigation system, unique alloy wheels, 7-speaker surround-sound system, and a Premium Trim package consisting of leather upholstery, heated front seats, and a rear center armrest.

Under the Hood
Unlike other more mainstream hybrids, the 2014 Chevrolet Volt's 1.4-liter 4-cylinder gas engine serves only to recharge a 16.5-kWh Lithium-ion battery, which is in turn connected to a pair of electric motors that drive the front wheels. (Only in extreme cases does the gas engine drive the wheels directly.) Net output for the entire system is 149 horsepower and 273 lb.-ft. of torque.

According to Chevrolet, the Volt plug-in hybrid can be fully recharged in 16-20 hours using a standard 120-volt outlet, or as few as 4 hours when connected to an optional 240-volt charging station.

Fuel Economy
Based on EPA data, the 2014 Chevrolet Volt offers an electric-only range of up to 38 miles (depending on weather conditions, driving style, and other factors), and its hybrid powertrain should deliver 35 mpg in the city, 40 mpg on the highway, and 37 mpg combined.

The EPA also offers a 98 MPGe (miles-per-gallon-equivalent) rating for the 2014 Volt, which suggests how far the car would travel on the electricity equivalent of one gallon of gasoline. It's a useful tool when comparing the Volt to similar models like the Nissan Leaf and Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid.

Safety Ratings and Technology
In crash tests conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the 2014 Chevrolet Volt received an overall rating of 5 (out of 5) stars. In tests conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), the 2014 Chevrolet Volt received a rating of \"Good\"--the Institute's highest--for moderate overlap front-impact protection.

On the features front, Chevy has equipped the 2014 Volt with 8 air bags, 4-wheel regenerative anti-lock disc brakes, OnStar telematics with emergency response services, and options including a rearview camera, front and rear park-assist sensors, forward-collision warning, and a lane-departure warning system.
