Overview
Chevrolet's 2008 TrailBlazer carries over from 2007, adding head curtain side air bags and electronic stability control as standard, along with three free months of XM satellite radio. The midsize sport utility vehicle (SUV), last redesigned in 2002, shares a frame-built architecture with the GMC Envoy and Saab 9-7X. TrailBlazers equipped with V-6 engines can tow up to 5900 pounds, while the V-8 engine can handle a maximum 6800 pounds.

Model Lineup
Chevrolet TrailBlazer for 2008 is offered in two models: LT and performance SS. The base 1LT model includes 17-inch wheels; dual-zone manual air conditioning; cruise control; power accessories; three free months XM satellite radio; and one-year OnStar Safe & Sound plan. Consumers choosing the 2LT get automatic climate control; rear air conditioning and audio controls; leather seats; power driver's seat; heated outside mirrors; and auto-dimming rearview mirror. The 3LT adds 18-inch wheels; driver's and passenger seat memory; heated front seats; and a Bose sound system. The TrailBlazer SS is equipped like the 1LT, but adds V-8 power; sport-tuned suspension; quicker steering; high-performance brakes; 20-inch wheels; limited-slip differential; and special trim on the interior and exterior. The 3SS model, like the 3LT, is even more generously equipped.

Options on the 2008 Chevrolet TrailBlazer include power-adjustable pedals (brake and accelerator); sunroof; premium audio systems; rear-seat DVD entertainment; navigation system; heated seats with 8-way power for driver and front passenger; and factory or dealer-installed running boards.

Powertrain
Three engines power the 2008 Chevrolet TrailBlazer. The base 4.2-liter V-6 engine delivers 285 hp at 6000 rpm and 276 lb.-ft. of torque at 4600 rpm. The 5.3-liter V-8 engine with active fuel management (optional on LT models) produces 300 hp at 5300 rpm and 321 lb.-ft. of torque at 4000 rpm. Both are mated to a 4-speed automatic transmission and available in either rear-wheel drive (2WD) or 4-wheel drive (4WD). EPA fuel economy is estimated at 14 mpg city/20 mpg highway for the 4.2-liter V-6 in either 2WD or 4WD and for the 2WD 5.3-liter V-8. The 4WD 5.3-liter V-8 is estimated at 13 mpg city/19 mpg highway.

The 6.0-liter V-8 engine, standard on SS models, pumps out 390 hp at 6000 rpm and 400 lb.-ft. of torque at 4000 rpm. Power is transferred through a heavy-duty 4-speed automatic transmission with overdrive to the rear wheels (2WD) or all four wheels for the all-wheel drive (AWD) model. EPA fuel economy for this engine is 12 mpg city/16 mpg highway for both 2WD and AWD.

Safety
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the Chevrolet TrailBlazer receives a 3-star rating for the driver's side and 4-star rating for the front passenger's side in frontal crash tests, and a 5-star rating for front and rear side-impact crash tests. In NHTSA rollover testing, the 2WD TrailBlazer receives a 3-star rating, while the 4WD model receives a 4-star rating.

Standard safety features on the 2008 Chevrolet TrailBlazer include dual-stage, frontal and front and rear head curtain side-impact air bags, and a driver information center (on 2LT, 3LT and SS models). Other safety features include standard one-year OnStar Safe & Sound plan; 4-wheel anti-lock brakes (ABS); tire-pressure-monitoring system; electronic stability control system; and optional adjustable brake and accelerator pedals.

Technology
Standard audio system on the 2008 Chevrolet TrailBlazer is an AM/FM stereo with CD player, theft-deterrent system and speed-sensitive volume control. An integrated navigation radio featuring a large display with touch-screen activation is optional on the top-line LT and SS models, while a 6-disc, 6-speaker system is optional on all 2008 TrailBlazers. There's also an optional Sun and 6-disc CD package that includes a sunroof, available as an option on 3LT and 3SS, while a Sun and Sound package, with power sunroof and Bose sound system, is available in 1LT, 2LT and 1SS models. An entertainment system with rear DVD player and navigation system is available on all but the 1LT model.
