What's New for 2014:

  • Convenience package now standard on the base LS trim level
  • Concord Metallic exterior paint color
  • To be replaced by a redesigned 2015 model

The 2014 Chevrolet Suburban is a full-size, body-on-frame SUV capable of accommodating up to 9 occupants and powered by a V-8 engine. Rear-wheel-drive (RWD) and 4-wheel-drive (4WD) versions are available, along with three trim levels. Competitors include Chevy's own Tahoe, as well as the Ford Expedition/Expedition EL, GMC Yukon/Yukon XL, Nissan Armada, and Toyota Sequoia.

Models and Features
Considered the base model, the 2014 Chevrolet Suburban LS rolls off the assembly line nicely equipped with tri-zone climate control, a 6-speaker audio system with rear headphone jacks and a USB port, satellite radio, Bluetooth connectivity, auto-dimming rearview mirror, and power-adjustable foot pedals. The list of standard features also includes remote start, power front seats with 6-way adjustment, 17-in. alloy wheels, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel.

Offered as the mid-level variant is the Suburban LT, home to a 9-speaker premium sound system, leather upholstery, heated front seats, and fog lights. At the top of the lineup is the 2014 Suburban LTZ, which is where buyers will find a 7-in. touch-screen navigation system linked to a 30GB hard drive, surround-sound system, heated and cooled front seats, heated second-row captain's chairs, heated steering wheel, and 20-in. alloy wheels.

Options and Packages
Chevy pulled out most of the stops with the loaded LTZ version, but the company did leave a few optional goodies on the table. Highlights include a rear-seat entertainment system, power tilt/slide moonroof, and huge 22-in. alloy wheels.

Under the Hood
Engineers have selected one of General Motors' most trusted workhorses for duty in the 2014 Chevrolet Suburban. It's a 5.3-liter V-8 engine that delivers 320 horsepower and 335 lb.-ft. of torque when the fuel tank is filled with regular-grade gasoline, or 326 and 348, respectively, when the engine is burning E85 (a mix of 85% ethanol and 15% gas). A 6-speed automatic transmission is standard for all 2014 Suburbans.

Fuel Economy
Interestingly, RWD and 4WD versions of the 2014 Suburban offer identical EPA-estimated fuel economy: 15 mpg in the city, 21 mpg on the highway, and 17 mpg combined.

Safety Ratings and Technology
In crash tests conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the 2014 Chevrolet Suburban received an overall rating of 4 (out of 5) stars. As this overview is written, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has not rated the 2014 Suburban.

To protect people inside and outside of the Suburban, Chevy has equipped its largest SUV with 6 air bags, a rearview camera, OnStar telematics with emergency response services, rear park-assist sensors, and side blind-zone alert (LTZ only).
