Introduction
The 2014 Chevrolet SS is a 5-passenger, rear-wheel-drive (RWD) high-performance sedan built on the same platform as the Chevy Camaro, but offered exclusively with a potent V-8 engine. There is no watered-down, V-6-powered variant offered. Competitors come from all strata of the automotive market, with notable mentions including the Audi S4, Dodge Charger R/T, Ford Taurus SHO, Hyundai Genesis R-Spec, Lexus IS F, and the Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG.

Models and Features
Selecting the most suitable SS trim level is an easy affair, as only one is available. Standard amenities include an 8-in. touch-screen audio and navigation system, Bluetooth connectivity and streaming audio, dual-zone climate control, digital head-up display, and push-button start. Also on the list are heated and cooled power front seats with 10-way adjustment, leather upholstery and trim, voice-activated calling and texting capability, 19-in. alloy wheels, rain-sensing wipers, and--a first for Chevy--electronic self-parking technology that allows the SS to steer itself into an open parallel space while the driver operates the foot pedals.

Options and Packages
Most everything offered on the 2014 SS has been filed under the standard category, though there are a couple of exceptions. Buyers who want a little something extra can opt for a power tilt/slide moonroof, as well as a full-size spare tire and wheel.

Under the Hood
To earn its high-performance sedan stripes, the 2014 Chevrolet SS has been fitted with an aluminum 6.2-liter V-8 engine that produces 415 horsepower and 415 lb.-ft. of torque. A 6-speed automatic with steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters is the only available transmission, and is responsible for delivering output to the rear wheels. Chevy claims the SS can sprint from 0-60 mph in just 5 seconds.

Complementing the powertrain is a sport-tuned adjustable suspension system, electric power steering, and Brembo brake components.

Fuel Economy
With its strong emphasis on going fast, it's not surprising to learn that the 2014 Chevrolet SS doesn't offer stellar fuel efficiency. According to the EPA, drivers can expect to average only 14 mpg around town, though long runs on the highway should return a more palatable 21 mpg. Premium-grade gasoline is recommended by the manufacturer.

Safety and Ratings
As this overview is written, neither the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) nor the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has rated the crashworthiness of the 2014 Chevrolet SS.

Among the SS's standard safety items are 8 air bags, forward-collision and lane-departure warning systems, OnStar telematics with emergency response services, rearview camera, rear cross-traffic and side blind-zone alerts, and bright HID headlights.
