The 2014 Chevrolet Spark EV is an electric version of Chevy's unexpectedly popular 4-passenger, 5-door mini-compact car. Compared with a standard Spark, the Spark EV receives aerodynamic styling modifications, a unique set of aluminum wheels with low-rolling-resistance tires, and active grille shutters. The Spark EV competes against the Fiat 500e and Smart Fortwo Electric Drive.
Models and Features
The new 2014 Spark EV is sold only in LT trim. Standard equipment includes air conditioning, power windows, power side mirrors, power door locks with remote keyless entry, tilt steering wheel, cruise control, floor mats, fog lights, and 15-inch aluminum wheels. Additionally, the Spark EV is equipped with automatic headlights, ambient cabin lighting, LED control lighting, trip computer, outside temperature display, heated front seats, and a steering wheel with radio and Bluetooth controls.
Remote vehicle starting and cabin pre-conditioning are also included in the base price, allowing the Spark EV's owner to heat or cool the interior while the car is still connected to a power source. This model also has a configurable 7-inch LCD gauge cluster with a digital speedometer and a driver information center that provides an electric powertrain efficiency gauge and a \"confidence gauge\" that displays real-time remaining range based on driving style and conditions.
Chevrolet includes 3 years of free OnStar services with the Spark EV, compared to the 6 months of free service usually included for Chevrolet models. Additionally, the Spark EV is equipped with a Chevrolet MyLink infotainment system with a 7-inch color touch screen, voice-recognition technology, and unique electric powertrain information displays. One year of free access to TuneIn global radio and Siri Eyes Free service is included with the MyLink system, and Spark EV owners can download a BringGo navigation app with Google Local Search for $60. MyLink also includes Bluetooth streaming audio capability, satellite radio, and a USB connection.
Options and Packages
Spark EV buyers can choose a 2LT trim package that adds leatherette seats and a leather-wrapped steering wheel to the car. A DC Fast Charger is also optional, providing an 80% battery charge in just 20 minutes when using a DC fast charge station, according to Chevrolet. Dealers can install additional accessories.
Under the Hood
The 2014 Spark EV is equipped with an electric motor that generates 130 horsepower and 400 lb.-ft. of torque. A 21-kWh rechargeable lithium-ion battery pack is positioned beneath the car's 9.6 cu.-ft. cargo space, providing 82 miles of driving range, according to the EPA. A single-speed transmission powers the front wheels, and the driver can select between Normal and Sport driving modes. Four-wheel-disc regenerative brakes capture energy and feed it to the battery pack while the car is driven.
Three charging options are offered for the Spark EV. A 120-volt charger and charging cord are standard, and can re-charge a completely drained battery in 20 hours using a standard household electrical outlet. A 240-volt charger and charging cord are optional, cutting re-charge time to 7 hours, but the owner's home must be equipped with a dedicated 240-volt charging station. A DC Fast Charger is optional, and compatible with municipal DC fast-charge stations. Using this equipment, a Spark EV can capture 80% of its maximum battery capacity in just 20 minutes, Chevy says.
According to the EPA, the 2014 Chevy Spark EV is rated to get 128 MPGe in the city, 109 MPGe on the highway, and 119 MPGe in combined driving.
Safety Ratings and Technology
The Spark EV has not been crash-tested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) as this overview is written.
Every Spark EV is equipped with 10 standard air bags, 4-wheel-disc anti-lock brakes with brake assist, and a stability and traction control system. OnStar service is free for the first 3 years of ownership, and includes an Automatic Crash Response feature that summons rescuers when the air bags deploy.
OnStar also offers an opt-in service called FamilyLink, which provides the ability to find out where the Spark EV is at any given time. The system's RemoteLink Mobile App delivers unique plug-in reminders and low-temperature alerts via the owner's smartphone, and OnStar also offers Way Point Navigation for the Spark EV, allowing owners to plan trip routes based on charging station locations.
