What's New for 2015:
  • Available 4G LTE Wi-Fi connection through OnStar
  • Sonic LTZ equipped with standard turbocharged engine
  • Blue Velvet paint color

The 2015 Chevrolet Sonic is a subcompact car designed to compete against models such as the Ford Fiesta, Honda Fit, Hyundai Accent, Kia Rio, Mazda 2, Nissan Versa, and Toyota Yaris. With that in mind, the Sonic is larger and heavier than its competitors.

Models and Features
The 2015 Sonic is offered as a 4-door sedan or a 5-door hatchback in LS, LT, LTZ, and sporty RS trim.

In addition to or in place of base Sonic LS features, the Sonic LT is equipped with upgraded seat cloth, cruise control, power windows, heated outside mirrors, floor mats, and a premium audio system with satellite radio, Bluetooth music streaming capability, and a USB port. This version also comes with aluminum wheels, and when buyers add the automatic transmission, the Sonic LT has remote engine starting.

Choose the Sonic LTZ for a standard turbocharged engine, along with fog lights, bigger 17-in. aluminum wheels, perforated leatherette seat upholstery, leather-wrapped steering wheel, and heated front seats. This version also includes a Chevrolet MyLink infotainment system with a 7-in. color touch-screen display, voice-recognition technology, Siri Eyes Free compatibility, Pandora Internet radio, Tune In global radio, Stitcher SmartRadio, text-messaging support, and a reversing camera.

The Sonic RS is the sporty version, with transmission and suspension tweaks designed to make it feel more athletic, 4-wheel-disc brakes, and a sport-tuned exhaust. Visually, the RS is set apart by unique wheels painted Midnight Silver, as well as revised styling details to give the car a racier look. Inside, the Sonic RS is equipped with leather sport-bolstered front seats with simulated suede inserts, sport-design steering wheel, black plastic trim, and brushed aluminum pedals.

Under the Hood
A 138-horsepower, 1.8-liter 4-cylinder engine is standard for the Sonic LS and LT. Choose the Sonic LTZ and RS for a turbocharged, 1.4-liter 4-cylinder engine generating 138 horsepower, which is optional for the Sonic LT.

What's the difference if the horsepower figures are the same? The turbocharged engine makes its power lower in the rev range, and also generates more torque, making the Sonic LTZ and RS models feel quicker and more responsive. Chevrolet says 90% of peak torque is available from 2,400 rpm to 6,500 rpm.

Either engine is equipped with a 6-speed manual gearbox or an optional 6-speed automatic transmission delivering power to the front wheels. Scheduled maintenance is free, too, at least for the first 2 years or 24,000 miles.

Fuel Economy
The 1.8-liter 4-cylinder engine that is standard in the Sonic LS and LT is rated to get from a low of 25 mpg in the city to a high of 35 mpg on the highway, depending on transmission, while the turbocharged engine in the LTZ should return anywhere from 27 mpg in the city to 40 mpg on the highway.

The Sonic RS has a transmission with different axle ratios in order to make it feel a little bit sportier, and this reduces fuel-economy estimates. In the RS, the turbocharged engine is rated to return anywhere from 25 mpg in the city to 34 mpg on the highway, depending on transmission.

Safety and Technology
In addition to providing a free 6-month subscription to OnStar Directions and Connections service, this year the Sonic is upgraded with available 4G LTE Internet connectivity, turning the car into a mobile Wi-Fi hotspot. Service is free for the first 3 months or 3GB of data usage, whichever comes first.

Every 2015 Sonic is equipped with 10 standard air bags, and OnStar provides Automatic Crash Response service, which helps to speed rescue following a collision. Chevrolet also offers an Advanced Safety package for LT, LTZ, and RS trim levels, equipping the car with a forward-collision warning system and a lane-departure warning system.

Choose a Sonic with the MyLink infotainment system and you can run a BringGo navigation app through the screen, bringing an affordable navigation and data-services solution to Chevrolet's popular small car.
