What's New for 2015:
  • MyLink radio adds text-messaging alerts and Siri Eyes Free capability
  • OnStar offers 4G LTE connectivity, turning Malibu into a Wi-Fi hotspot
  • New paint colors include Autumn Bronze, Butte Red, Iridescent Pearl Tricoat, and Sable
  • Malibu Eco model is discontinued

The 2015 Chevrolet Malibu is a midsize sedan. It competes in one of the most hotly contested segments of the market against a long list of models. They include the Chrysler 200, Ford Fusion, Honda Accord, Hyundai Sonata, Kia Optima, Mazda 6, Nissan Altima, Subaru Legacy, Toyota Camry, and Volkswagen Passat.

Models and Features
Malibu buyers select between LS, LT, and LTZ trim levels. Buy the Malibu LT for a MyLink radio with a touch-screen display, reversing camera, and a hidden storage panel behind the screen. This version also comes with upgraded cloth seats, floor mats, ambient cabin lighting, wood-tone interior trim, projector-style headlights, and heated outside mirrors with turn signal indicators.

A 2LT package of additional features enhances the Malibu LT with a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, dual-zone automatic climate control, 8-way power-adjustable driver's seat, remote engine starting system, and a 120-volt rear-seat power outlet. Fog lights and a set of 18-in. aluminum wheels identify the Malibu 2LT.

The Malibu LTZ includes leather seats, 8-way power-adjustable front passenger's seat, and heated front seats, along with a cargo net, auto-dimming rearview mirror, and express operation for the driver's window. The LTZ also has a unique 18-in. wheel design and dual exhaust outlets.

Under the Hood
A 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine is standard for all 2015 Malibu models; it generates 196 horsepower, sent to the car's front wheels through a 6-speed automatic transmission. An automatic start/stop system is standard with this engine, designed to save fuel by shutting the Malibu's engine off when the car is idling in traffic or at an intersection.

The Malibu LT and LTZ can be upgraded to a turbocharged, 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine. It makes 259 horsepower and 295 lb.-ft. of torque, the latter contributing to significantly improved throttle response and acceleration, according to Chevrolet. A 6-speed automatic transmission is also standard with this engine.

Fuel Economy
According to the EPA, the 2015 Malibu's standard 4-cylinder engine is rated to get 25 mpg in the city and 36 mpg on the highway. The Malibu's optional turbocharged engine is not as fuel-efficient, rated to return 21 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway.

Safety and Technology
In crash tests performed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the 2015 Malibu earns an overall rating of 5 stars, the highest possible. The Malibu is also a \"Top Safety Pick\" according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), which gives Chevy's midsize sedan a \"Basic\" rating for front crash prevention.

That front crash-prevention rating for the Malibu applies only to vehicles equipped with the available forward-collision warning system, which is a part of the Advanced Safety package on the Malibu 2LT and the LTZ. The package also contains lane-departure warning, a side blind-zone alert system, and rear cross-traffic alert.

All Malibus except for the LS version include a MyLink infotainment system as standard equipment, and it comes with a reversing camera. Additionally, MyLink is equipped with Bluetooth streaming audio capability, voice-recognition technology, access to Internet radio stations, Gracenote music database software, satellite radio, USB port, and an auxiliary audio input jack. For 2015, MyLink also provides new text-messaging alerts and Siri Eyes Free compatibility. MyLink can be upgraded with a navigation system.

OnStar's new 4G LTE connection is free for the first 3 months or until the Malibu's owner has used 3 gigabytes of data. It turns the Malibu into a mobile Wi-Fi hotspot. OnStar also includes a trial period to services including Automatic Crash Response, which activates if the Malibu's air bags deploy, contacting emergency rescue personnel and helping to speed them to the scene of the accident.
