For 2009, the 5-passenger Chevrolet Equinox compact SUV adds a few items as standard equipment that were previously optional. Available in four models, including the return of Equinox Sport and Equinox LTZ, the lineup is powered by two V-6 engines and features optional on-demand all-wheel drive (AWD). The front-wheel-drive (FWD) Equinox has one of the longest wheelbases in its class at 112.5 inches and has electronic trailer sway control integrated with standard electronic stability control. Three new colors are added for 2009: Silver Ice Metallic, Gold Mist Metallic and Cyber Gray Metallic.

Model Lineup
The 2009 Chevrolet Equinox is available in four models: Equinox LS, LT, LTZ and Sport, in FWD or optional AWD. Standard equipment includes 5-passenger seating; StabiliTrak electronic stability control with integrated trailer sway control; power door locks with remote keyless entry; power windows; air conditioning; tilt steering; rear liftgate with washer/wiper and defogger; fold-down front passenger seat to carry longer cargo; sliding rear seat with 60/40-split seatback and 2-position recline; OnStar; and XM satellite radio. Equinox LT models feature body-colored door handles, outside mirrors and roof rail side bars, as well as optional remote vehicle start and an upgraded Pioneer 7-speaker sound system.

The Equinox LTZ has 17-inch, bright chrome-clad aluminum wheels, bright chrome door handles, and luggage rack side rail inserts. Inside the LTZ are heated front seats with leather seating inserts, AM/FM stereo with 6-disc in-dash CD changer and MP3 CD playback capability, and a Pioneer 7-speaker sound system. Equinox Sport, the performance model, not only has a unique 3.6-liter V-6 engine and 6-speed automatic transmission, but it also has specific body-colored front and rear fascias and grille cross bar; 18-inch flangeless, high-polished, forged aluminum 5-spoke wheels; and P235/50R18 tires. Inside, the Equinox Sport has standard all-ebony trim, leather-wrapped steering wheel, 140-mph speedometer, and a unique shifter.

The 2009 Chevrolet Equinox is powered by a 3.4-liter V-6 engine that generates 185 hp at 5200 rpm and 210 lb.-ft. of torque at 3800 rpm. The engine is mated to an electronically controlled 5-speed automatic transmission. The Equinox Sport features the more powerful, \"high-feature\" 3.6-liter dual-overhead cam (DOHC) V-6 engine that delivers 264 hp at 6500 rpm and 250 lb.-ft. of torque at 2300 rpm, paired with a 6-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission with manual shift mode. EPA fuel-economy estimates are 17 mpg city/24 mpg highway for the FWD 3.4-liter V-6 engine and FWD 3.6-liter V-6 engine. In AWD configuration, the 3.4-liter V-6 engine's numbers are the same: 17 mpg city/24 mpg highway. The EPA estimates for the AWD 3.6-liter V-6 engine are 16 mpg city/24 mpg highway.

The Equinox's suspension is independent MacPherson strut in front and 4-link coil springs in the rear. All Equinox models for 2009 have standard vented front disc brakes with dual-piston calipers and rear disc brakes, anti-lock brakes (ABS), and electronic stability control with integrated trailer sway and traction control.

Standard safety features on the Chevrolet Equinox include dual-stage front air bags with GM's passenger-sensing system and, new for 2009, curtain side air bags with rollover protection sensors; front safety belt pre-tensioners; Lower Anchors and Tethers for CHildren (LATCH) system; child-safe door locks; ABS; traction control; tire-pressure monitor; electronic trailer sway control integrated into the electronic stability control system; and a multi-function remote that operates anti-theft, door lock/unlock, panic alarm, illuminated entry and remote ignition functions.

In crash tests conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the 2009 Chevrolet Equinox earned perfect 5-star ratings in driver and passenger front and front- and rear-seat side crash tests. In rollover testing, the 2008 Equinox received a 4-star rating for FWD and AWD models.

All Chevrolet Equinox models for 2009 have standard XM satellite radio. Models equipped with OnStar are also ready for OnStar's Turn-by-Turn Navigation, the first fully integrated and factory-installed GPS navigation system from OnStar (requires a monthly fee). In terms of sound systems, the choices for 2009 include an AM/FM stereo with CD player; one with CD/MP3 player and Radio Data System (RDS); AM/FM stereo with 6-disc in-dash CD/MP3 and RDS; AM/FM stereo with CD/MP3 player with DVD playback and RDS, and AM/FM stereo with DC/MP3 player with full-feature navigation with touch screen, voice control and RDS.
