Exterior Features
The Cadillac Escalade is a full-size luxury SUV. The truck-based platform is also used for the Chevrolet Tahoe and the GMC Yukon. The gasoline powered Escalade is sold in four trim levels: Standard, Luxury, Premium, and Platinum. The hybrid gasoline electric Escalade Hybrid is offered in Standard and Platinum trim levels. Eighteen-inch wheels, a Tow package, and Xenon headlights are standard. The Luxury trim upgrades to 22-inch chrome wheels, automatic high-beam headlights, a sunroof, and active suspension, while the Premium trim adds power-retractable running boards. The Platinum trim features special cosmetic touches.

Interior Features
Although the Escalade's cabin is normally configured for 7 passengers, an optional second-row bench seat allows for 8 passengers. Standard equipment on the 2012 Escalade includes leather upholstery, air conditioning with automatic 3-zone control, power-adjustable pedals, power tailgate, heated first- and second-row seats, Bluetooth connectivity, a full range of power accessories, and a Bose surround-sound system. The Luxury trim adds power-folding second-row seats, and a blind-spot monitoring system. The Escalade Premium trim adds rear-seat DVD entertainment, while the Escalade Platinum trim includes upgraded leather upholstery, upgraded infotainment, and more.

Optional Features
Some standard equipment on upper trim levels is optional on lower trim levels, including a rear-seat entertainment system, power-retractable assist steps, LED headlamps, and 22-inch chrome wheels.

Under the Hood
The 2012 Cadillac Escalade is offered with a choice of two engines. The standard power plant is a 6.2-liter V-8 engine rated at 403 horsepower and mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission. The Escalade Hybrid is fitted with a 6.0-liter, 8-cylinder gasoline engine that works with a pair of 60-kilowatt electric motors inside the transmission. The combined power output is 332 horsepower. The Hybrid's gearbox is a unique 2-mode continuous electric ratio hybrid transmission with four fixed gears. Rear-wheel drive (RWD) is standard, with all-wheel drive (AWD) optional on all Escalades.

Fuel Economy
EPA fuel-economy figures for the 2012 Cadillac Escalade are:
- Escalade with RWD: 14/18/16 mpg (city/highway/combined)
- Escalade with AWD: 13/18/15 mpg
- Escalade Hybrid: 20/23/21 mpg

Safety
Standard safety features on the 2012 Cadillac Escalade include anti-lock brakes, traction control, a full complement of air bags, parking sensors, rearview camera, and OnStar telematics.

In government tests conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the Escalade received 5 (out of 5) stars for frontal- and side-impact crash protection; 3 stars for rollover protection; and 4 stars overall. To date, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has not conducted tests on the 2012 Cadillac Escalade.
