The 2015 Buick Regal is a premium midsize sedan that was designed and engineered in Germany. In Europe and other global markets, the Regal is known as the Opel Insignia. In the United States, the Regal competes against top-trim versions of mainstream sedans as well as premium models like the Acura TLX, Audi A3, Infiniti Q40, Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class, and Volvo S60.

Models and Features
Four versions of the 2015 Regal are offered by Buick: base, Premium I, Premium II, and GS, the latter a performance-tuned version.

Premium I trim adds passive keyless entry with push-button engine starting, heated steering wheel, 12-way power front passenger's seat, programmable universal remote control, 120-volt power outlet, and rear park-assist sensors. Choose the Premium II Regal for a navigation system, premium audio system, rear-seat side-impact air bags, and bi-xenon headlights.

The performance-tuned Regal GS adds upgraded suspension and braking components, as well as Interactive Drive Control technology and a set of 19-in. aluminum wheels. Unique styling cues, front park-assist sensors, a rear spoiler, and dual exhaust outlets set the GS apart, while the cabin is equipped with sport bucket seats and metallic pedal covers.

Under the Hood
Every version of the 2015 Regal is equipped with a turbocharged, 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine, one making 259 horsepower at 5,300 rpm and 295 lb.-ft. of torque between 3,000 and 4,000 rpm. In the sporty Regal GS, peak torque kicks in earlier, at 2,500 rpm. A 6-speed automatic transmission is standard, with a 6-speed manual gearbox optional for the Regal GS. Buyers can also equip the Regal with an all-wheel-drive (AWD) system.

Buyers who upgrade to Premium I trim receive a mild-hybrid powertrain at no extra charge. This eAssist option pairs a 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine with a 15-kW electric motor and a 15-kW Lithium-ion battery to generate a combined 182 horsepower. So equipped, the electric motor and battery assist the gasoline engine; the Regal is unable to operate solely on electricity, even at low speeds.

Fuel Economy
When equipped with its standard turbocharged engine the 2015 Regal gets a minimum of 20 mpg in the city and a maximum of 31 mpg on the highway, depending on transmission choice. Get the optional AWD system and those numbers drop to 19 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the highway.

For better gas mileage try the eAssist powertrain. It is expected to return 25 mpg in the city and 36 mpg on the highway.

Safety and Technology
All versions of the 2015 Regal include a reversing camera and a long list of OnStar services that are free for varying amounts of time. For example, the new 4G LTE Wi-Fi connection is active for 3 months or 3GB of data usage;  after that, the owner must pay for service. The Directions and Connections service package is free for 6 months, and includes Automatic Crash Response. Basic Plan service is included for 5 years.

The 2015 Regal also comes with an IntelliLink infotainment system with an 8-in. color touch screen. It includes capacitive touch and swipe capability, and natural-voice-recognition technology allows for hands-free operation of the system. This year, IntelliLink adds the ability to read incoming text messages aloud over the stereo speakers and features Siri Eyes Free compatibility. A navigation system is an optional upgrade for IntelliLink, and Regal buyers can also choose a premium audio system.

The Sporty Regal GS version has a standard Interactive Drive Control System that supplies normal, GS, and Competition driving modes, as well as an 8-in. configurable instrumentation screen.

Safety-related upgrades include two different Driver Confidence option packages. The first adds side blind-zone alert, lane-change alert, lane-departure warning, rear cross-traffic alert, and a forward-collision warning system. Get the Driver Confidence II package and the Regal is further equipped with full-speed-range adaptive cruise control and a collision-preparation and collision-mitigation braking system.
