The BMW X5 is a midsize luxury crossover SUV that competes with the Land Rover Range Rover Sport, Infiniti QX60, Acura MDX, Cadillac Escalade, Lincoln Navigator, and Mercedes-Benz M-Class. Most versions of the 2014 X5 are all-wheel drive (AWD), although a rear-wheel-drive (RWD) version is available. It's offered with an inline 6-cylinder engine, turbocharged V-8, or a diesel engine which, like the others, is now coupled with an 8-speed automatic transmission. A long menu of custom options includes packages plus individual options and accessories.

Models and Features
The 2014 BMW X5 is available in four trim levels: sDrive35i, xDrive35i, xDrive35d, and xDrive50i. Each has three lines in addition to the base model: Luxury, xLine, and M Sport. The standard exterior features include multi-spoke 19-in. light alloy wheels with run-flat all-season tires; xenon adaptive headlights with auto-leveling, LED fog lights, intermittent rain-sensing windshield wipers with adjustable and vehicle-speed-sensitive wiping intervals, single-wipe control, and windshield-washer system with heated washer jets; rear-window wiper/washer with adjustable wiping interval; matte black roof rails; roof spoiler with center brakelight; chrome exhaust tips; chrome-line exterior trim; and body-color exterior door and tailgate handles.

Interior features of the X5 include 20-way power multi-contour front seats with standard 10-way power seat functions, plus additional power adjustment functions for shoulder and thigh support, backrest width, and lumbar support (contour and position), plus 2-way manual lateral adjustment for headrest; heated front seats; front-seat center console with armrest, storage compartment, and auxiliary input; rear-seat center armrest; 40/20/40 split-folding rear seats; leather upholstery; poplar wood trim; and a fully finished cargo area with velour carpeting, cargo cover, and remote trunk release. Third-row seats are available. Total cargo space behind the rear seats is 22.9 cu. ft.; with the rear seats folded, 66 cu. ft. are available.

Options and Packages
The Luxury line adds extra chrome, roof rails, upgraded wheels, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. The xLine offers different versions of those enhancements. The M Sport line adds sportier seats and transmission, special footrest, door sills, and steering wheel, and upgraded wheels. The Cold Weather package includes heated front and rear seats, heated steering wheel, and retractable headlight washers. Driver Assistance Plus includes Active Driving Assistant (with ACC Stop & Go available with a surcharge); active blind-spot detection, surround view camera, and speed limit information. The Dynamic Handling package includes roll stabilization and performance control. The Lighting package adds automatic high beams. The Executive package adds soft-close automatic doors, a Harman-Kardon surround-sound system (or a premium-priced Bang & Olufsen sound system), keyless entry, head-up display, satellite radio with one-year subscription, rear manual side window shades, and ceramic controls. Ivory white or mocha Nappa leather are available.

Individual options include active steering, dynamic damper control, a rear-seat entertainment system, park assist, concierge services, front ventilated seats, aluminum running boards, comfort rear seats, third-row seats with rear axle air suspension, 4-zone climate control, and Nappa leather dash.

Under The Hood
The base engine on the 2014 BMW X5 is a 3.0-liter, turbocharged inline 6-cylinder engine making 300 horsepower. It's coupled with an 8-speed automatic transmission with Adaptive Transmission Control (ATC) and includes includes Sport and Steptronic manual shift modes. The diesel engine is a 3.0-liter inline 6-cylinder generating 255 horsepower; the V-8 is a 4.4-liter, 445-horsepower model that combines two turbochargers with variable valve control.

Fuel Economy
The EPA's fuel-economy ratings are 19 mpg city/22 mpg highway/22 mpg combined for the X5 sDrive35i; 18/27/21 mpg for the X5 xDrive35i; 14/22/17 mpg for the X5 xDrive50i. As of this writing, figures for the diesel engine have not been released.

Safety Ratings and Technology
Standard safety features on the 2014 X5 include a full complement of air bags, front and rear head protection, rollover sensor, adaptive brakelights, and much more. Safety options include surround-view camera, and night vision with pedestrian detection.

No safety ratings are yet available for the 2014 BMW X5 from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gave the BMW X5 its top rating of \"Good\" in frontal offset, side impact, and roof strength tests.
