The BMW X3 is a compact luxury crossover SUV that competes with the Audi Q5, Lexus RX 350, Acura RDX, Land Rover Range Rover Evoque, and Volvo XC60, among others. It's an all-wheel-drive (AWD) vehicle that's offered with a 4-cylinder or an inline 6-cylinder engine, and with a long menu of custom options.

Models and Features
The 2014 BMW X3 is available in two trim levels: xDrive28i and xDrive35i. The exterior of the xDrive28i features V Spoke 18-in. light alloy wheels and run-flat all-season tires, power liftgate, halogen free-form fog lights, door handles in matching body color, privacy glass, and chrome tailpipe finishers. The interior includes leatherette upholstery, 8-way power-adjustable front seats with 2-way manual headrests, and driver's-seat and mirror memory, silver matte trim, black high-gloss instrument panel, iDrive electronics interface, front center console armrest, split fold-down rear seat, and a 3-spoke leather-wrapped multi-function steering wheel with controls for the audio system, cruise control, and Bluetooth wireless communication. The xDrive35i adds adaptive bi-xenon headlights, a panoramic sunroof, and wood trim, all of which are available on the xDrive28i. Total cargo space with the rear seats folded is 63.3 cu. ft.

Options and Packages
The Cold Weather package includes heated front and rear seats, heated steering wheel, and retractable headlight washers. The Driver Assistance package adds a rear-view camera and park distance control; a rear-view camera with a top view is optional. Driver Assistance Plus includes lane-departure warning and speed limit information. The Dynamic Handling package includes variable sport steering and performance control. The Lighting package adds xenon headlights and adaptive light control. The M Sport package includes high-gloss or satin aluminum roof rails, 19-in. double-spoke wheels, shadowline or satin aluminum exterior trim, dynamic damper control, aerodynamic kit, anthracite headliner, and sport seats. Alpine White exterior paint is available with the package at no extra charge; Black Sapphire Metallic is offered at a premium. The Premium package includes lumbar support, satellite radio with a one-year subscription, Comfort Access keyless entry, panoramic moonroof, and a wide range of leather upholstery options. The Technology package adds a head-up display, advanced real-time traffic information, BMW Online and BMW Apps, navigation system, enhanced USB and Bluetooth with Smartphone integration, and remote services.

Many of the items in the equipment packages are available as individual options. A premium sound system, automatic high beams, and park distance control are also available. Available accessories include several premium wheel and tire sets, BMW tablet DVD system, iPad holder, carpeted floor mats, ski/snowboard holder, raised carrier bars, cycle holder, two sizes of roof box, a storage system, and a maintenance program upgrade.

Under The Hood
The base standard engine is a 2.0-liter, turbocharged inline 4-cylinder that generates 240 horsepower. The 8-speed automatic transmission features Sport and Manual shift modes and Adaptive Transmission Control (ATC). The xDrive35i employs a 3.0-liter, turbocharged inline 6-cylinder engine making 300 horsepower. The engines work with the xDrive AWD system and vehicle-speed-sensitive power steering.

Fuel Economy
For the 4-cylinder engine, the EPA's fuel-economy ratings are 21 mpg city/28 mpg highway/24 mpg combined. The xDrive35i's 6-cylinder engine provides 19/26/21 mpg.

Safety Ratings and Technology
Standard safety features on the 2014 BMW X3 include a full complement of air bags, front and rear head protection; active head restraints for the front seats; BMW's Advanced Safety System for integrated deployment of passive and active safety features; coded driveaway protection; a crash sensor that activates disconnect of alternator, fuel pump, and starter from battery and automatically unlocks doors and turns on hazard and interior lights; anti-theft alarm; assist call system; and anti-lock disc brakes.

No safety ratings are yet available for the 2014 BMW X3 from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gives the BMW X3 its top rating of \"Good\" in frontal offset, side impact, and roof strength tests.
