Exterior Features
The 2013 Audi S8 is based on the Audi A8, a 5-passenger luxury sedan. Like the A8, the S8 employs aluminum Audi Space Frame (ASF) construction, and is equipped with a long list of standard features.

Highlights from the 2013 S8's standard equipment list include full LED lighting, including the headlights, running lights, taillights, turn signal lights, and side mirror puddle lighting. The S8 is also equipped with headlight washers, heated power-folding exterior mirrors, rain-sensing wipers, heated washer nozzles, quad exhaust outlets, and aluminum accent trim. All-season performance tires are standard, mounted to 21-inch aluminum wheels, and the S8 offers power soft-closing doors and a power-opening and -closing trunk lid.

Interior Features
Inside, the 2013 Audi S8 is equipped with 22-way power-adjustable sport seats with heating, ventilation, memory, and massage. Sport-stitched Valcona leather upholstery is standard, as well as a mix of aluminum and Carbon Atlas interior trim, Nappa leather extended to several parts of the cabin, Alcantara premium headliner, and a 3-spoke power tilt/telescoping sport steering wheel with shift paddles. The S8 also includes 4-zone automatic climate control, dual-panel acoustic side window glass, power backlight and rear window sunshades, LED ambient cabin lighting, and a power sunroof.

Audi Advanced Key keyless entry and push-button ignition fires the S8's twin-turbo V-8 engine, and this luxury sport sedan includes Bluetooth connectivity with music streaming and a 630-watt Bose premium surround-sound audio system with satellite radio, HD Radio, and an iPod connection. The Audi MMI Navigation Plus system includes voice-recognition, handwriting recognition pad, and Audi Connect service with Google Earth navigation images, Google Local search, and mobile Wi-Fi capability.

Optional Features
Several option packages are offered for the 2013 Audi S8. The Cold Weather package includes heated rear seats, heated steering wheel and a rear-seat pass-through with a ski bag. The Driver Assistance package adds adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring system, and Audi Pre-Sense Plus technology. The Audi Lane Assist package adds a lane-departure warning system and a 4-spoke steering wheel rather than the 3-spoke sport steering wheel. Finally, the Full Leather package adds Nappa leather to the entire dashboard and door panels, as well as the headrest housings.

To further personalize the S8, Audi offers the Design Selection package. This option includes unique Balao Brown leather with Snow White stitching and piping, Snow White Alcantara headliner, Balsamic Brown Natural Fine Grain Ash wood trim, and brushed aluminum inlays.

Additional extra-cost upgrades for the Audi S8 include a dual-screen rear-seat entertainment system, 1,400-watt Bang & Olufsen advanced audio system with 19 speakers, Night Vision Assistant with Pedestrian Detection technology, solar sunroof, variety of cabin materials and trims, and different 21-inch wheel designs with performance tires.

Under the Hood
A twin-turbocharged, direct-injection, 4.0-liter V-8 engine powers the 2013 Audi S8, generating 520 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 481 lb.-ft. of torque at 5,500 rpm. An 8-speed automatic transmission is paired with Audi's Quattro all-wheel-drive system and a sport rear differential. Under normal driving conditions, the Quattro delivers 60% of engine power to the rear wheels. Audi says the S8 accelerates to 60 mph in 3.9 seconds.

The S8 is equipped with a performance braking system and a performance adaptive air suspension. Using Audi Drive Select technology, the driver can tailor the S8's steering, suspension and drivetrain components to match one of three pre-selected settings: Comfort, Auto or Dynamic. An Individual setting is also available, and allows the driver to mix-and-match various elements from the Comfort, Auto and Dynamic menus.

Fuel Economy
EPA fuel-economy estimates for the 2013 Audi S8 are 15/26/19 mpg (city/highway/combined).

The 2013 Audi S8 includes 8 air bags (including knee air bags for front-seat occupants), traction control, stability control, and 4-wheel ventilated disc anti-lock brakes with brake assist. Additional standard features include rain-sensing wipers, reversing camera, front and rear park-assist sensors, and auto-dimming headlights.

An optional Driver Assistance package includes an active cruise control system with stop-and-go capability, blind-spot monitoring system, and Audi PreSense Plus technology. Audi PreSense Plus senses when a crash is potentially going to occur, can automatically apply the brakes to slow the S8 prior to impact, and readies the cabin for a crash by shutting the sunroof, closing the windows, and tightening the seat belts.

Additional safety-related options include an Active Lane Assist system and Night Vision Assistant with Pedestrian Detection technology. This latter feature can detect people and animals up to 1,000 feet ahead of the car, and when the S8 is within 300 feet of the person or animal, the system signals a yellow visual warning to remind the driver to use caution. If the person or animal steps into the S8's path as the car approaches, the visual warning turns from yellow to red.

As this overview is written, neither the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) nor the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has performed crash tests on the 2013 Audi S8 or the Audi A8 on which it is based.
