The A3 is a 5-door hatchback, Audi's entry-level model. It's available with a conventional gasoline engine, or in its latest incarnation-the A3 TDI, introduced in 2010-a diesel-powered version of the Audi A3 that is emissions-compliant in all 50 states.

The 2011 Audi A3 is available in Premium and Premium Plus trim levels. The A3 Premium package includes 17-inch alloy wheels, dual-zone automatic climate control, full power accessories, cruise control, 10-speaker audio system, and trip computer. The Premium Plus package includes upgraded lights, aluminum interior trim, power driver's seat, and Bluetooth connectivity. Various other option packages are available, including Cold Weather (adds heated seats and accessories); Sport (18-inch wheels, sportier suspension and seats, and summer tires); and Convenience (automatic headlights and wipers, and upgraded sound system). The Titanium Sport package is offered only with the Premium Plus trim, and adds cosmetic upgrades.

The standard power plant on the 2011 Audi A3 2.0T model is a turbocharged, 200-horsepower, 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine that generates 207 lb.-ft. of torque and delivers 21 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway, according to the EPA. The A3 TDI boasts a 140-horsepower, 2.0-liter, 4-cylinder diesel engine that produces 236 lb.-ft. of torque. EPA-estimated mileage for the diesel engine is 30 mpg in the city and 42 mpg on the highway. The gasoline-powered A3 comes with front-wheel drive (FWD) or Audi's Quattro all-wheel drive (AWD), while the diesel-powered TDI is FWD only. Front-wheel-drive models feature either a 6-speed manual or Audi's \"S tronic\" 6-speed transmission, which has manual and automatic modes. The AWD and diesel models employ the S tronic transmission.

Standard safety features on the 2011 Audi A3 include anti-lock brakes, stability control, front side air bags (rear side air bags are optional), side curtain air bags, and front head restraints. In crash tests conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), the Audi A3 received the highest-possible \"Good\" ratings in frontal-offset, rear-impact, and side-impact tests.
