With more than 25 million units sold worldwide since its first introduction, the Golf (and its sibling "Rabbit" in the United States) is the world's third best-selling model, according to VW. Over the past five generations, the compact-sized Golf has been configured in 3-door hatchback, 5-door hatchback, station wagon, and convertible variants. Originally conceived as a simple front-wheel-drive (FWD) 4-cylinder economy hatchback in the 1970s, the diversity of late-model versions demonstrates the flexibility of the platform. Today's Golf/Rabbit offerings range from fuel-efficient diesel-powered sedans to high-performance, race-oriented, AWD 6-cylinder hatchbacks.

Critical Knowledge:Completely redesigned2.0-liter, turbocharged 4-cylinder engine210 horsepowerFront-wheel driveElectronic limited-slip differentialOn sale in summer 2009IntroductionMany enthusiasts consider the Volkswagen GTI the original "hot hatch" compact car. Based on the Golf platform, the GTI was introduced to the U.S. in 1983 as the performance-oriented version of the Rabbit (then, as now, the Golf was renamed the Rabbit for the American market). With its ideal combination of utility, efficiency, and fun-to-drive character in a single package, the GTI is one of the most-recognized Volkswagen models on the road, due in part to the fact that the Golf from which it springs is VW's perennial best-selling platform. Originally a 2-door hatchback, a 4-door GTI model joined the lineup in 2008.

With a competent full-time all-wheel-drive system and solid mechanicals underneath, the midsize Touareg is heavy (and thirsty), but admirable off-road. To address those who do not plan a race across the Sahara in the Dakar rally, and those looking for more urban agility, on-road prowess, and fuel economy, Volkswagen introduces the 2009 Tiguan (tee-wan). This is the Touareg's little brother, and it bears a strong family resemblance to the bigger VW SUV. The Tiguan will find itself in US showrooms in the summer of 2008.

Critical Knowledge:50-state emissions compliant diesel3.0-liter turbocharged V-6 engine221 hp and 407 lb.-ft. of torqueEstimated 25 mpg highwayHighway cruising range of more than 600 milesIntroductionIntroduced for the 2004 model year, and designed in conjunction with the Porsche Cayenne, the Volkswagen Touareg was VW's first SUV. The 5-seat Touareg delivered a blend of car-like handling with truck-like off-road prowess despite its low stance, according to the manufacturer. The 2007 model year saw the return of the diesel-powered Touareg, with a 10-cylinder twin-turbo engine that delivered better acceleration and fuel economy than its gasoline-powered counterparts. It's price-at the top of the Touareg model range-and the fact it wasn't 50-state emissions compliant led to its removal from the U.S. lineup. The Touareg received a significant update in 2008 that initiated a name change to differentiate the model from the prior years (it was now the "Touareg 2"). In 2009, Volkswagen is re-introducing a diesel powerplant to the Touareg. This time around, the automaker has chosen an efficient 50-state emissions compliant V-6 TDI powerplant.

Over the past 30 years, each generation of the Passat platform has been offered in many different configurations. Whether manufactured as a sedan, hatchback or station wagon, all have shared the same basic exterior and interior architecture. Volkswagen has broken tradition with the introduction of the Passat CC: its first 4-door coup_. While still bearing a strong family resemblance, the all-new Passat coup_ is styled like none of its predecessors. According to Volkswagen, "The CC features a muscular shoulder line, which visually connects the front wheel wells to the taillights, providing the emotional and expressive stance of a sports coup_ with the convenience of a sedan." The Volkswagen CC will be in showrooms in late 2008.

With the driver positioned over the front wheels, and the engine low in the rear of the chassis, the vehicle configurations were limitless. Over the years, the Microbus platform was built as a bus, camper, cargo van, pickup truck, and even as an emergency vehicle. The Volkswagen van proved popular, and the original platform continued to evolve over the decades through the introduction of the Volkswagen Vanagon in 1979, and the Volkswagen Eurovan in 1990. Unlike its predecessors, the later Eurovan models featured a front-mounted, water-cooled engine and the driver was positioned behind the front wheels in a more conventional (and safer) manner. The Volkswagen Eurovan was sold in the United States until 2003.

Critical Knowledge:All-new, third-generation modelStyling evokes earlier Giorgetto Giugiaro designFront-wheel-drive (FWD) platformGasoline and diesel enginesOn sale in late summer 2008North American sales not announcedIntroductionThe Volkswagen Scirocco traces its roots back to the Karmann Ghia, the German automaker's popular Italian-styled coup_ that was in production for nearly two decades beginning in the mid 1950s. Volkswagen was looking for a more modern replacement for the Beetle-based Ghia, so they chose to build the new car on their updated front engine/FWD Rabbit platform. The first Scirocco debuted in 1974 at the Geneva Motor Show. With styling penned by Giorgetto Giugiaro, the 2-door coup_ with a liftback was much sleeker and sportier than its platform twin, even though they shared nearly all of the same running gear. Over the next 18 years, the Scirocco continued to be the sportiest model in the lineup, even as it was sold side-by-side with Volkswagen's popular Rabbit/Golf GTI. VW discontinued the Scirocco in 1992, replacing it with the short-lived Corrado. The 2008 Geneva Motor Show marks the 34th anniversary of the first launch of the Scirocco, and the first introduction of an all-new, third-generation model. At this time, the 2009 Volkswagen Scirocco is designated for sale only in European markets.
