How to File an Auto Insurance Claim

By Jeff Youngs, December 31, 2011
Accidents happen. Regardless of fault, there is a good chance that you will have to contact an insurance company to coordinate any necessary repairs. To simplify the process, this article outlines how to file an automotive insurance claim.

Immediately after the accident, and after determining that there are no major injuries, take notes and exchange license plate numbers, contact information, and insurance information. Take pictures from many different angles, if possible. Look for witnesses, and write down their names and contact information this will come in handy later.

If damage is beyond a few scratches, contact the police for an accident or incident report this is invaluable because you want an independent, third-party opinion, and a police report is often uncontested.

Contact your insurance company as soon as possible you might even want to contact them from the scene of the accident. Listen carefully to their questions, and answer them to the best of your ability. Keep in mind that the other drivers will be reporting their version of the incident to their own insurance companies, so be very specific by citing specific times and unique details.

Your insurance company will handle the claim, and represent you in any possible further action. However, expect a call from the other driver's insurance company who will conduct their own investigation this is completely normal.

A short time later, your insurance company will call and authorize your vehicle for repairs.
