Recall Roundup: Volkswagen Recalls Passat

Recall Roundup: Volkswagen Recalls Passat

By Joseph Dobrian, April 04, 2016
During the past week, automakers recalled approximately 107,000 vehicles, including Volkswagen, Mercedes-Benz, Dodge, Jeep, and Ram models. The largest recall affects about 91,000 Volkswagen Passat vehicles equipped with TDI engines, from the 2012-2014 model years. Details for each vehicle recall are below, in alphabetical order by car brand.

2015-2016 Dodge Durango
2015-2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee
  • Number of vehicles affected: 14,768
  • Date of manufacture: December 9, 2015 to January 14, 2016
  • Issue: The left front brake caliper may crack due to being made from an incorrect material. A cracked brake caliper may lengthen the distance needed to stop the vehicle and increase the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: Fiat Chrysler Automobiles US (Chrysler) will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the front left brake caliper and depending on its casting date, replace it, free of charge.
  • Timing: The manufacturer has not yet provided a notification schedule. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403.
  • Manufacturer recall number: S16
  • NHTSA recall number: 16V168000

2016 Mercedes-Benz GLC300, GLC300 4Matic
  • Number of vehicles affected: 888
  • Date of manufacture: June 16, 2015 to November 3, 2015
  • Issue: The steering columns in the affected vehicles may have the wiring harness for the switch module incorrectly routed. As a result, the harness may chafe and the air bag may unexpectedly deploy or the engine may stall.
  • Remedy: Mercedes-Benz will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the wiring harnesses, properly rerouting them as necessary. Any damaged harnesses will be replaced. These repairs will be performed free of charge to the vehicle owner.
  • Timing: The recall is expected to begin in April 2016. Owners may contact Mercedes-Benz customer service at 1-800-367-6372.
  • NHTSA recall number: 16V146000
  • Number of vehicles affected: 442
  • Date of manufacture: January 22, 2015 to September 13, 2015
  • Issue: Contamination on the Electric Power Steering (EPS) control circuit board may cause a short and result in the loss of power steering assist. If the vehicle experiences a loss of power steering assist, extra steering effort will be required, especially at lower speeds, increasing the risk of a vehicle crash.
  • Remedy: Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will replace the EPS unit free of charge.
  • Timing: The manufacturer has not yet provided a notification schedule. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403.
  • Manufacturer recall number: S19
  • NHTSA recall number: 16V167000

2012-2014 Volkswagen Passat TDI
  • Number of vehicles affected: 91,000
  • Date of manufacture: Recall affects vehicles from the 2012, 2013, and 2014 model years.
  • Issue: Certain Passat vehicles equipped with TDI engines may have improperly assembled wire seals in a connector for an underbody sensor. In these vehicles, water may enter and corrode the electrical connectors of the sensor, causing an electrical short.
  • Remedy: Volkswagen has notified owners, and dealers will inspect the connector, replacing it as necessary, free of charge.
  • Timing: The manufacturer has not yet provided a notification schedule. Owners may contact Volkswagen customer service at 1-800-893-5298.
  • Manufacturer recall number: 23T3
  • NHTSA recall number: 16171000
