Recall Roundup: Toyota Recalls Nearly 200K Vehicles Over Air Bag, Fuel System Concerns; Mitsubishi Recalls Outlander Sport

During the past week, automakers recalled more than 400,000 light passenger vehicles, dating back to the 2010 model year. Toyota Motor (Toyota), Mitsubishi Motors North America (Mitsubishi), and Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) account for the largest recalls; Volkswagen Group of America (VW), Ford Motor Co. (Ford), and Jaguar Land Rover North America (Jaguar) have also recalled vehicles.

Details for each safety recall follow, in alphabetical order by car brand.

2018 Ford Escape
2018 Lincoln MKC
  • Number of vehicles affected: 88
  • Issue: These vehicles may be equipped with incorrect front brake hoses that may chafe against other components, possibly resulting in a brake fluid leak.
  • Remedy: Ford will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the brake hoses, replacing any that are incorrect, free of charge.
  • Timing: The recall is expected to begin March 5, 2018. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332.

2018 Hyundai Santa Fe, Santa Fe Sport

  • Number of vehicles affected: 43,941
  • Issue: The steering wheel assembly may break, possibly resulting in the steering wheel separating from the steering column while driving.
  • Remedy: Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will check the production lot number of the steering wheel assembly, replacing it as necessary, free of charge.
  • Timing: The recall is expected to begin March 16, 2018. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460.

2018 Jaguar XF Sportbrake

  • Number of vehicles affected: 307
  • Issue: The supplemental restraint system (SRS) calibration may be incorrect, possibly causing the frontal air bags to deploy improperly in a low-speed crash.
  • Remedy: Jaguar will notify owners, and dealers will update the software for the air bag system free of charge.
  • Timing: The recall is expected to begin April 6, 2018. Owners may contact Jaguar customer service at 1-800-452-4827.

2015-2018 Lexus RC F

  • Number of vehicles affected: 9,905
  • Issue: The affected 2016-2018 Lexus GS F, 2018 Lexus LC 500, and 2015-2018 Lexus RC F vehicles are equipped with 5.0-liter V-8 2UR-GSE engines with two high-pressure fuel pumps. Specific operating conditions may result in damage to the pulsation damper in one of the high-pressure fuel pumps, possibly causing a fatigue crack in the fuel pump cover.
  • Remedy: Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will replace the high-pressure fuel pumps free of charge.
  • Timing: The recall is expected to begin April 2, 2018. Owners may contact Lexus customer service at 1-800-255-3987.

2011-2016 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport

  • Number of vehicles affected: 158,651
  • Issue: Water may enter between the hood and windshield and cause the front wiper link ball joint to corrode, possibly resulting in the wiper link separating and the wipers becoming inoperative.
  • Remedy: Mitsubishi will notify owners, and dealers will replace the rod of the wiper link and the wiper motor crank arm free of charge.
  • Timing: The recall is expected to begin April 10, 2018. Owners may contact Mitsubishi customer service at 1-888-648-7820.

2003-2008 Toyota Corolla Matrix
2010-2012 Toyota Yaris

  • Number of vehicles affected: 116,126
  • Issue: Toyota is recalling 14,585 model-year 2010-2012 Yaris vehicles ever registered in the states of Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Tennessee, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and Wyoming. Toyota is additionally recalling 3,347 model-year 2010 Pontiac Vibe vehicles located in the states listed above. Also included in this recall filing is 98,194 model-year 2003-2008 Toyota Corolla Matrix vehicles, located throughout the United States, that previously received a like-for-like interim air bag inflator replacement. These vehicles are equipped with certain air bag inflators assembled as part of the passenger frontal air bag modules used as original equipment or replacement equipment. In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the passenger frontal air bag, these inflators may explode due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to absolute humidity and temperature cycling.
  • Remedy: Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will replace the passenger frontal air bag assemblies with an alternate inflator free of charge.
  • Timing: The recall is expected to begin by March 10, 2018. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331.
  • Manufacturer recall number: G0R (Zone B), and H0A (Zone C), J0A (Matrix Zone A), J0A (Matrix Zone A), J0A (Matrix Zone A)
  • NHTSA recall number: 18V025000


2018 Toyota Camry

  • Number of vehicles affected: 11,807
  • Issue: The affected vehicles are equipped with V-6 engines. These vehicles have fuel delivery pipes that may not be properly connected to the fuel hoses in the engine compartment.
  • Remedy: Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the fuel pipes for the correct installation, correcting them as necessary, free of charge.
  • Timing: The recall is expected to begin March 30, 2018. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-888-270-9371.

2018 Toyota Tundra
2018 Toyota Sequoia

  • Number of vehicles affected: 64,901
  • Issue: Electrical interference within the power supply circuit may cause the vehicle's electronic stability control system to be deactivated.
  • Remedy: Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will update the vehicle's software free of charge.
  • Timing: The recall is expected to begin March 12, 2018. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-888-270-9371.

2017-2018 Volkswagen Tiguan Limited

  • Number of vehicles affected: 3,768
  • Issue: The front driver air bag installed on these vehicles may not be intended for use in vehicles sold in the United States.
  • Remedy: Volkswagen will notify owners, and dealers will replace the steering wheel and front driver air bag module free of charge.
  • Timing: The recall is expected to begin April 10, 2018. Owners may contact Volkswagen customer service at 1-800-893-5298.
