Recall Roundup: Toyota Recalls 2012-2015 Prius Plug-in Hybrids to Replace Fuse

During the past week, various automobile manufacturers recalled a total of just under 100,000 light passenger vehicles. The largest recalls affect BMW i3 vehicles from the 2014-2018 model years, and Toyota Prius plug-in hybrid vehicles from the 2012-2015 model years. American Honda Motor Co. (Honda), Mercedes-Benz USA (Mercedes), and Subaru of America (Subaru) also issued recalls.

Details for each safety recall follow, in alphabetical order by car brand.

2014-2018 BMW i3 Electric, Hybrid Electric
  • Number of vehicles affected: 32,000
  • Issue: Unbelted small adult drivers may be at a higher risk of neck injury in the event of a frontal crash.
  • Remedy: BMW will notify owners. The remedy for this recall is still under development.
  • Timing: The recall is expected to begin January 8, 2018. Owners may contact BMW customer service at the dedicated i3 recall number 1-855-269-3361.

2017 Honda Civic Sedan, Coupe

  • Number of vehicles affected: 5,404
  • Issue: The right halfshaft may have been improperly heat treated, reducing its strength.
  • Remedy: Honda will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the halfshaft's serial number, replacing it as necessary and aligning the front wheels free of charge.
  • Timing: The recall is expected to begin December 15, 2017. Owners may contact Honda customer service at 1-888-234-2138.

2016-2017 Mercedes-Benz G-Class

  • Number of vehicles affected: 8,043
  • Issue: The recall affects certain 2016-2017 G550 4Matic, G63 AMG, and G65 AMG vehicles. A malfunction of the electronic stability program (ESP), while Distronic Plus is engaged, may cause the engine to not reduce power, regardless of the vehicle's speed, driving situation, or brake application.
  • Remedy: Mercedes will notify owners, and dealers will reprogram the ESP control unit software free of charge.
  • Timing: The recall is expected to begin in December 2017. Owners may contact Mercedes-Benz customer service at 1-800-367-6372.

2017-2018 Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class

  • Number of vehicles affected: 9,379
  • Issue: In the affected 2017-2018 GLC300, GLC300 4Matic, and GLC43 AMG vehicles, the fixed panoramic sun roof frontal and side plastic panels may have insufficient bonding, allowing the panels to separate during vehicle operation.
  • Remedy: Mercedes will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the bonding on the sun roof panels, correcting it as necessary, free of charge.
  • Timing: The recall is expected to begin December 8, 2017. Owners may contact Mercedes-Benz customer service at 1-800-367-6372.

2018 Subaru Crosstrek

  • Number of vehicles affected: 2,367
  • Issue: The affected vehicles may be equipped with an incorrect floor mat retention bracket, allowing the floor mat to move out of position and interfere with the accelerator or brake pedal operation.
  • Remedy: Subaru has notified owners, and dealers will inspect the floor mat retention bracket and replace it if necessary, free of charge.
  • Timing: The recall began November 14, 2017. Owners may contact Subaru customer service at 1-800-782-2783.

  • NHTSA recall number: 17V701000


2012-2015 Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid

  • Number of vehicles affected: 39,915
  • Issue: The hybrid battery contains an electric vehicle (EV) fuse that may fracture after repeated high-load driving conditions such as climbing long hills.
  • Remedy: Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will replace the EV fuse free of charge.
  • Timing: The recall is expected to begin January 8, 2018. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331.
