Recall Roundup: Software Glitches Force Several Recalls

By Jeff Youngs, July 22, 2013
During the past week, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued numerous recalls for various problems across several manufacturers, many of which involve vehicle software problems.

2013 Chrysler Town & Country
Chrysler is recalling the 2013 Town & Country minivan and its corporate twin, the 2013 Dodge Grand Caravan.

A total of 184 units of both models that were built on June 11, 2013, and June 12, 2013 have an Occupant Restraint Control Module (OCRM) equipped with incorrect software. The incorrect software may keep the air bags from deploying in an accident, or may cause the air bags to incorrectly deploy. Either scenario increases the risk of occupant injury in a collision.

To resolve the problem, Chrysler and Dodge dealers will replace the ORCM at no cost to vehicle owners, beginning in August of 2013. Chrysler's recall campaign number is N48, and the NHTSA recall campaign ID number is 13V291. Concerned owners can contact Chrysler at 1-800-247-9753.

2013 Honda Accord
Honda is recalling 1,659 versions of the 2013 Accord built between January 15, 2013, and April 5, 2013, and equipped with Low Emission Vehicle II (LEV II) emissions equipment. On these vehicles, the fuel tank neck may cause the fuel pump to improperly seal to the fuel tank, which could cause a fuel leak and increase the risk for a fire.

Honda will notify specific vehicle owners affected by this recall, and dealers will replace the fuel tank and other components at no cost to the vehicle owner. The recall is expected to begin on August 1, 2013.

Honda's recall number is JA9, and the NHTSA recall campaign ID number is 13V297. Concerned owners can contact Honda at 1-310-783-2000.

2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee
Jeep is recalling 4,458 units of the 2014 Grand Cherokee equipped with premium headlights and built from January 14, 2013 to March 20, 2013. The Grand Cherokee SRT is not affected by this recall.

In these vehicles, when the headlights switch from daytime running light mode to headlight mode, electrical spikes may cause the parking lamps to turn off. Starting in August 2013, dealers will resolve the problem by installing updated Central Body Software at no cost to the owner.

Jeep's recall campaign number for this action is N42, and the NHTSA recall campaign ID number is 13V289. Owners with questions can call Jeep at 1-800-247-9753.

2013 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport
From January 17, 2013, to January 25, 2013, Mitsubishi built 305 units of the Outlander Sport with an incorrectly welded front strut stabilizer link. If the stabilizer link detaches from the strut, it could damage the front tire or the brake hose, potentially resulting in greater difficulty in controlling or stopping the vehicle.

To fix the problem, Mitsubishi dealers will inspect and replace the front left strut assembly. The automaker has not set a timetable for this recall as this article is written. Concerned owners can contact Mitsubishi with questions by calling 1-800-222-0037. The Mitsubishi recall number is SR-13-008, and the NHTSA recall campaign ID number is 13V300.

2013 Ram 1500
Chrysler's truck division, Ram, is recalling 45,961 units of the 2013 Ram 1500 light-duty pickup equipped with 4-wheel drive and built between June 26, 2012, and February 5, 2013. In these vehicles, a software problem may disable the truck's stability control system when the engine is started, thereby increasing the risk for a crash.

To remedy the problem, Ram dealers will update the software at no cost to the customer, starting in August 2013. Chrysler's recall number is N37, and the NHTSA recall campaign ID number is 13V287. Owners can call Chrysler with questions by dialing 1-800-247-9753.

2012 Toyota Yaris
Toyota is recalling 74 units of the 2012 Yaris that were built from August 21, 2011, to August 31, 2011. In these vehicles, the electric power steering could experience a short circuit, disabling power steering assistance and increasing the risk of a crash.

To fix the problem, dealers will replace the power steering control module at no charge to the vehicle owner, starting in late July of 2013. Owners can contact Toyota directly at 1-800-331-4331, referencing NHTSA recall campaign ID number 13V292.
