By Joseph Dobrian, May 10, 2016
During the past week, a total of 172,924 vehicles were recalled by their manufacturers. The recalls affect vehicles made by General Motors (GM), Hyundai Motor America, Kia Motors America, Mercedes-Benz USA, Nissan North America, and Toyota Motor, from the 2014 through 2017 model years. Details for each safety recall are below, in alphabetical order by car brand.

2016-2017 Cadillac, Chevrolet, GMC Vehicles
  • Number of vehicles affected: 4,789
  • Date of manufacture: GM is recalling certain model-year 2016-2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500, and 2016 Cadillac Escalade, Cadillac Escalade ESV, Chevrolet Suburban, Chevrolet Tahoe, GMC Sierra, GMC Yukon, and GMC Yukon XL vehicles.
  • Issue: The front upper control arms may have inadequate welds near the control arm bushing. Inadequate welds may allow the control arm to separate from the bushing, compromising steering and increasing the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the left and right front upper control arms and realign the vehicle free of charge. Parts are not currently available.
  • Timing: Owners will be mailed an interim notification in early May 2016 and will be mailed a second notice when remedy parts are available. Until the repairs have been made, owners are advised not to drive their vehicles. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020, Cadillac customer service at 1-800-458-8006, or GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782.

2015-2016 Hyundai Sonata, Sonata Hybrid

  • Number of vehicles affected: 33
  • Date of manufacture: May 29, 2014 to February 22, 2016
  • Issue: The driver's frontal air bag may be missing a chemical enhancer required for the second stage air bag deployment, resulting in the second stage not deploying in certain crashes. The primary stage will deploy as intended.
  • Remedy: Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will replace the driver's frontal air bag module free of charge.
  • Timing: The recall is expected to begin in May 2016. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460.

  • Remedy: Kia will notify owners, and dealers will replace the driver's frontal air bag module free of charge.
  • Timing: The recall is expected to begin in May 2016. Owners may contact Kia customer service at 1-800-333-4542.

2016 Mercedes-Benz SLK300
  • Number of vehicles affected: 223
  • Date of manufacture: June 2, 2015 to July 14, 2015
  • Issue: The backup power supply for the ignition switch in the affected vehicles may not have been properly connected. As a result, if the vehicle is being driven and there is a loss of power from the main vehicle battery, the transmission cannot be shifted to "Park" nor can the electric parking brake be applied. In this situation, without the backup power supply, the only way to keep the vehicle from moving is to press the brake pedal. As soon as the driver attempts to exit the vehicle, the vehicle may roll, increasing the risk of injury.
  • Remedy: Mercedes-Benz will notify owners, and dealers will correct the ignition switch wiring and perform a software update free of charge.
  • Timing: The recall is expected to begin in May 2016. Owners may contact Mercedes-Benz customer service at 1-800-367-6372.
  • NHTSA recall number: 16V211000

2014-2016 Nissan Rogue
  • Number of vehicles affected: 108,503
  • Date of manufacture: July 31, 2013 to January 16, 2016
  • Issue: The rear liftgate support stays may corrode due to insufficient anti-corrosion treatment. Corrosion of one or both of the rear liftgate support stays could cause a sudden release of pressure. If this occurs, the support stays may break off, increasing the risk of injury.
  • Remedy: Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will replace the rear tailgate stays free of charge. Parts are not currently available.
  • Timing: Owners will be sent interim notifications by mid-June 2016. A second notice will be sent when remedy parts become available. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-647-7261.

As a result, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of FMVSS No. 110: Tire Selection and Rims for Passenger Cars. An incorrect label may result in the vehicle being overloaded.
  • Remedy: Gulf States will notify owners, and dealers will install an accurate label free of charge.
  • Timing: The recall is expected to begin on June 1, 2016. Owners may contact Gulf States customer service at 1-800-444-1074.
  • Manufacturer recall number: 16R2
  • NHTSA recall number: 16V228000

2016 Toyota Avalon
2016 Toyota Camry
  • Number of vehicles affected: 58,515
  • Date of manufacture: November 30, 2015 to March 4, 2016

As a result, the front-passenger air bag and the front-passenger knee air bag may not deploy as intended in certain crash scenarios. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 208: Occupant Crash Protection.
  • Remedy: Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will recalibrate the OCS free of charge.
