Recall Roundup: Nissan Recalls Infiniti Q50, Q50 Hybrid Sedan to Reprogram Steering Software

By Joseph Dobrian, June 28, 2016
During the past week, Maserati North America, Mercedes-Benz USA, Nissan North America (Nissan), and Volkswagen Group of America issued safety recalls affecting a total of 51,749 vehicles. The largest of these recalls comes from Nissan, which recalled 28,182 Infiniti Q50 and Q50 Hybrid vehicles from the 2014-2016 model years. Details for each safety recall are below, in alphabetical order by car brand.

2014-2016 Infiniti Q50, Q50 Hybrid
  • Number of vehicles affected: 28,182
  • Date of manufacture: December 10, 2012 to December 17, 2015
  • Issue: The Direct Adaptive Steering system may experience an error at vehicle start-up, altering the vehicle's steering responsiveness and turning radius. If the vehicle does not steer as the driver anticipates, risk of a crash increases.
  • Remedy: Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will reprogram the Direct Adaptive Steering ECU software free of charge.
  • Timing: The recall is expected to begin by August 9, 2016. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-647-7261.
  • NHTSA recall number: 16V430000

2014 Maserati Ghibli
2014 Maserati Quattroporte
  • Number of vehicles affected: 13,092
  • Date of manufacture: June 1, 2013 to February 28, 2014
  • Issue: Vehicles equipped with an 8-speed automatic transmission and a Monostable gear selector may mislead owners about which gear the vehicle is in and may not adequately warn the driver when the driver's door is opened and the vehicle is not in Park, allowing them to exit the vehicle while the vehicle is still in gear. Drivers thinking that their vehicle's transmission is in the Park position may be struck by the vehicle and injured if they attempt to get out of the vehicle while the engine is running and the parking brake is not engaged.
  • Remedy: Maserati will notify owners, and dealers will perform a software update free of charge. The remedy software is currently in development.
  • Timing: Owners will be mailed an interim notification on July 1, 2016. A second notice will be mailed when the software is available. Owners may contact Maserati customer service at 1-201-510-2369.
  • NHTSA recall number: 16V333000
  • Number of vehicles affected: 136
  • Date of manufacture: June 1, 2015 to July 24, 2015
  • Issue: The adhesive bond between the carbon-fiber driveshaft and the rear flange may fail, and as a result, there may be a loss of torque to the rear wheels. If the adhesive bond fails and results in a loss of torque to the rear wheels, the vehicle operator may be unable to move the vehicle, or may experience deceleration if the vehicle is in motion, increasing the risk of a vehicle crash.
  • Remedy: Mercedes-Benz will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and replace the carbon-fiber driveshaft, as necessary, free of charge.
  • Timing: The recall is expected to begin in June 2016. Owners may contact Mercedes-Benz customer service at 1-800-367-6372.
  • Manufacturer recall number: 2016050008
  • NHTSA recall number: 16V308000

2016 Mercedes-Benz CLA45 AMG
  • Number of vehicles affected: 1
  • Date of manufacture: November 10, 2015
  • Issue: This vehicle is equipped with a dual-clutch transmission that may have a defective weld between the dual clutch disk and hub. This weld may crack and result in a loss of power to the wheels, causing the vehicle to stop. A sudden loss of power can increase the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: Mercedes-Benz will notify the owner, and a dealer will replace the dual clutch free of charge.
  • Timing: The recall is expected to begin in June 2016. The owner may contact Mercedes-Benz customer service at 1-800-367-6372.
  • NHTSA recall number: 16V335000

2016 Mercedes-Benz SLK300
  • Number of vehicles affected: 327
  • Date of manufacture: January 19, 2016 to April 19, 2016
  • Issue: Improperly manufactured lock nuts may have been used on the rear wheel tie-rod connection, and as a result, the rear wheel alignment may change and the rear axle may steer independently. A change of the rear-wheel alignment and independent steering of the rear axle may increase the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: Mercedes-Benz will notify owners, and dealers will replace the lock nuts on the rear tie rods free of charge.
  • Timing: The recall is expected to begin in June 2016. Owners may contact Mercedes-Benz customer service at 1-800-367-6372.
  • Manufacturer recall number: 2016050008
  • NHTSA recall number: 16V306000

2016 Volkswagen Golf
  • Number of vehicles affected: 11
  • Date of manufacture: March 17, 2016 to March 23, 2016
  • Issue: The affected vehicles may be equipped with a federal certification label that lists an incorrect rear-axle weight limit. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of 49 CFR Part 567: Certification. The listed weight limit is low enough that the vehicle owner may ignore the weight limits and overload the vehicle and exceed the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR), thereby increasing the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: Volkswagen will notify owners, and dealers will install a corrected certification label free of charge.
  • Timing: The recall is expected to begin in June 2016.
  • Manufacturer recall number: 01B5
  • NHTSA recall number: 16V337000
