Recall Roundup: Nissan to Fix Occupant Classification System Control Unit on Nearly 4 Million Vehicles

By Joseph Dobrian, May 02, 2016
During the past week, more than 4.7 million vehicles were recalled by their manufacturers. The largest recalls involve various Nissan-made vehicles that have issues with their front passenger-seat occupant classification system (OCS). Other recalls involve Jeep, Chrysler, Jaguar, Kia, and Mazda vehicles. Details for each safety recall are below, in alphabetical order by car brand.

Various 2013-2017 Chevrolet, Infiniti, and Nissan Vehicles
  • Number of vehicles affected: 3,177,645
  • Date of manufacture: Vehicles from the 2013 through 2017 model years are affected
  • Issue: Nissan North America (Nissan) is recalling certain model-year 2016-2017 Nissan Maxima; 2013-2016 Nissan Altima, NV200, Leaf, and Sentra; 2013-2017 Nissan Pathfinder; 2014-2016 Nissan NV200 Taxi, Infiniti QX60, and Infiniti Q50; 2014-2017 Nissan Rogue; 2015-2016 Nissan Murano and Chevrolet City Express; and 2013 Infiniti JX35 vehicles. In these vehicles, the front passenger-seat occupant classification system (OCS) may incorrectly classify an adult passenger as a child or classify the seat as empty despite it being occupied. As a result, the front-passenger frontal air bag may be turned off and not deploy in the event of a crash.
  • Remedy: Nissan will notify their owners. Chevrolet City Express owners will be notified by General Motors. Dealers will reprogram the air bag control unit (ACU) and OCS electronic control unit (ECU) in Altima, Maxima, Murano, Rogue, and Sentra vehicles, and replace the OCS ECU in Leaf, NV200, NV200 Taxi, Pathfinder, Infiniti Q50, JX35, QX60, and Chevrolet City Express vehicles. Repairs will be made free of charge to the vehicle owner.
  • Timing: The manufacturer has not yet provided a notification schedule. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-867-7669, Infiniti customer service at 1-888-833-3216, or Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020.
  • NHTSA recall number: 16V244000

2012-2015 Chrysler 300
2012-2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee
  • Number of vehicles affected: 811,586
  • Date of manufacture: February 15, 2011 to December 22, 2015
  • Issue: The affected vehicles, equipped with an 8-speed automatic transmission and a monostable gear selector, may not adequately warn the driver when the driver's door is opened and the vehicle is not in Park, allowing them to exit the vehicle while the vehicle is still in gear. Drivers thinking that their vehicle's transmission is in the Park position may be struck by the vehicle and injured if they attempt to get out of the vehicle while the engine is running and the parking brake is not engaged.
  • Remedy: Fiat Chrysler Automobiles US will notify owners, and dealers will update the vehicle software to mitigate the risk of vehicle rollaway, free of charge.
  • Timing: The manufacturer has not yet provided a notification schedule. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403.
  • Manufacturer recall number: S27
  • NHTSA recall number: 16V240000

2009, 2011-2012, and 2015 Jaguar XF
  • Number of vehicles affected: 5
  • Date of manufacture: February 6, 2008 to June 6, 2016
  • Issue: The driver’s frontal air bag may be missing a chemical enhancer required for the second-stage deployment, resulting in the second stage deploying improperly in certain crashes.
  • Remedy: Jaguar will notify owners, and dealers will replace the driver’s frontal air bag module free of charge.
  • Timing: The recall is expected to begin on June 6, 2016. Owners may contact Jaguar customer service at 1-800-452-4827.
  • Manufacturer recall number: J065
  • NHTSA recall number: 16V229000

2015-2016 Kia K900
  • Number of vehicles affected: 3,099
  • Date of manufacture: December 18, 2013 to January 11, 2016
  • Issue: When using the multi-function light switch in "Auto" mode, electrical resistance may build in the switch and result in the headlights flickering or turning off when driving.
  • Remedy: Kia will notify owners, and dealers will replace the multi-function switch free of charge.
  • Timing: The recall is expected to begin May 27, 2016. Owners may contact Kia customer service at 1-800-333-4542.
  • Manufacturer recall number: SC130
  • NHTSA recall number: 16V210000

2013-2016 Mazda 2
2013-2016 Mazda CX-3
2013-2016 Mazda CX-5
2013-2016 Mazda CX-9
  • Number of vehicles affected: 578
  • Date of manufacture: Vehicles from the 2012, 2013, and 2014 model years are affected
  • Issue: The lower mounting nuts and bolts that attach the front strut assembly to the steering knuckle may loosen, allowing the steering knuckle to separate. If the steering knuckle separates from the strut assembly, it can cause a loss of steering control, increasing the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: Mazda will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the lower mounting nuts and bolts that secure the front strut assembly to the steering knuckle. If the bolts are loose, they will be replaced and then correctly tightened. Repairs will be made free of charge to the vehicle owner.
  • Timing: The recall is expected to begin May 20, 2016. Owners may contact Mazda customer service at 1-800-222-5500.
  • Manufacturer recall number: 9316D
  • NHTSA recall number: 16V203000

2013-2016 Nissan Sentra
  • Number of vehicles affected: 622,110
  • Date of manufacture: June 13, 2012 to April 14, 2016
  • Issue: The front passenger seat belt bracket may become deformed if it is used to secure a child restraint system (CRS). The deformed seat bracket may cause the occupant classification system (OCS) to incorrectly classify the installed CRS, resulting in the front passenger air bag to not be turned off as designed when a CRS is in the seat.
  • Remedy: Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will reinforce the seat belt bracket as well as reprogram the air bag control unit (ACU) and OCS electronic control unit (ECU). Repairs will be made free of charge to the vehicle owner.
  • The remedy is not yet available. Owners will be mailed an interim notification by the end of June 2016 and will be sent a second letter when the remedy is available. Owners are warned not to install a CRS in the front seat. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-867-7669.
  • NHTSA recall number: 16V242000
