Recall Roundup: Nissan Announces Large Altima Recall; BMW to Fix Air Bag Modules

During the past week, various automakers issued recalls of a total of approximately 621,000 light passenger vehicles, the majority of those coming from Nissan North America, which recalled more than 340,000 Nissan Altima sedans. A recall from BMW of North America affects approximately 230,000 vehicles. Maserati North America and Kia Motors America also issued recalls.

Details for each safety recall are on the pages that follow, in alphabetical order by car brand.

2000-2002 BMW 3 Series, M3
2001-2002 BMW 5 Series, M5
2001-2003 BMW X5
  • Number of vehicles affected: 230,117
  • Date of manufacture: The recall affects vehicles from the 2000 through 2002 model years.
  • Issue: The affected 2000-2002 BMW 320i, 323i, 325i, 325xi, 330i, 330xi, 323Ci, 325Ci, 330Ci, M3, 323iT, 325iT, and 325xiT vehicles; 2001-2002 525i, 530i, 540i, M5, 525iT, and 540iT vehicles; and 2001-2003 X5 3.0i, X5 4.4i, and X5 4.6is vehicles may have had a driver-side air bag module installed as replacement equipment, such as after a vehicle crash necessitating replacement of the original air bag, or as a remedy part for a prior recall. These replacement modules contain an air bag inflator that may rupture due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to lower absolute humidity, temperature, and temperature cycling. In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the driver's frontal air bag, the inflator could rupture with metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants resulting in serious injury or death.
  • Remedy: BMW will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the driver side air bag module, replacing it as necessary, free of charge.
  • Timing: The recall is expected to begin March 15, 2017. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

2016 Kia Optima

  • Number of vehicles affected: 1
  • Date of manufacture: The recall affects a vehicle from the 2016 model year.
  • Issue: The end seal for the driver's frontal air bag inflator may not have been properly installed, possibly resulting in reduced inflation of the frontal air bag in the event of a crash.
  • Remedy: The vehicle has been remedied.
  • Timing: The affected vehicle was remedied on January 10, 2017. Owners may contact Kia customer service at 1-800-333-4542.

2014-2015 Maserati Ghibli
2014-2015 Maserati Quattroporte

  • Number of vehicles affected: 10,879
  • Date of manufacture: The recall affects vehicles from the 2014 and 2015 model years.
  • Issue: Fuel lines that may weep or leak fuel.
  • Remedy: Maserati will notify owners, and dealers will install a new fuel line free of charge.
  • Timing: The recall is expected to begin February 28, 2017. Owners may contact Maserati customer service at 1-201-510-2369.

2014-2017 Maserati Ghibli
2017 Maserati Levante
2014-2017 Maserati Quattroporte

  • Number of vehicles affected: 39,381
  • Date of manufacture: The recall affects vehicles from the 2014 through 2017 model years.
  • Issue: Adjusting the front seats may cause the seat wiring harness to rub, possibly resulting in an electrical short.
  • Remedy: Maserati will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the vehicles, replacing the seat wiring harness, as necessary, free of charge.
  • Timing: The recall is expected to begin March 21, 2017. Owners may contact Maserati customer service at 1-201-510-2369.

2015-2017 Nissan Altima

  • Number of vehicles affected: 341,005
  • Date of manufacture: The recall affects vehicles from the 2015 through 2017 model years.
  • Issue: The rear door latch/lock cable on the affected vehicles may have been improperly routed. As a result, lowering a rear window may inadvertently cause that door to unlatch and open.
  • Remedy: Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will correct the rear door latch/lock cable routing free of charge.
  • Timing: The manufacturer has not yet provided a notification schedule. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-647-7261.
