Recall Roundup: More Takata Air Bag Woes as Automakers Recall 3 Million Vehicles

A problem with air bag inflators, used as original or replacement equipment, is responsible for almost all of the more than 3 million light passenger vehicles that were recalled by various automakers during the past week. The recalls affect both foreign and domestic automakers, though Honda Motor Corp. was hit particularly hard. In most cases, remedy parts will be available in March.

Various 2005-2012 Acura, Honda Vehicles
  • Number of vehicles affected: 308,884
  • Date of manufacture: The recall affects vehicles from the 2005 through 2012 model years.
  • Issue: The affected 2005-2006 Acura MDX and Honda CR-V; 2005-2011 Honda Element; 2005-2012 Acura RL; 2006-2012 Honda Ridgeline; 2007-2008 Honda Fit; and 2005-2008 Honda Pilot vehicles are equipped with certain air bag inflators assembled as part of the passenger frontal air bag modules used as original equipment or replacement equipment. In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the front air bags, these inflators may rupture due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to absolute humidity and temperature cycling.
  • Remedy: Honda will notify owners, and dealers will replace the front passenger air bag inflator free of charge.

  • Remedy: BMW will notify owners, and dealers will replace the front passenger air bag inflator or air bag module free of charge.
  • Timing: Interim letters informing owners that parts are not yet available are expected to be mailed March 1, 2017. Owners will receive a second notice when remedy parts become available. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

2009, 2012 Dodge, Mercedes-Benz 2500 and 3500 Vans

  • Number of vehicles affected: 11,279
  • Date of manufacture: The recall affects vehicles from the 2009 and 2012 model years.
  • Issue: The affected 2012 Mercedes-Benz 2500 and 3500 Sprinter, and 2009 Dodge 2500 and 3500 Sprinter vehicles are equipped with certain air bag inflators assembled as part of the passenger frontal air bag modules, and used as original equipment or replacement equipment. In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the front air bags, these inflators may rupture due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to absolute humidity and temperature cycling.
  • Remedy: Daimler will notify owners, and dealers will replace the front passenger air bag module free of charge.

In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the passenger frontal air bag, these inflators may rupture due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to absolute humidity and temperature cycling.
  • Remedy: Ferrari will notify owners, and dealers will replace the front passenger air bag assembly free of charge.
  • Timing: Ferrari plans to send an interim letter to owners beginning March 13, 2017, and a second letter will be sent when parts are available. Owners may contact Ferrari customer service at 1-866-551-2828.

  • Issue: The affected vehicles have a passenger air bag inflator initiator that may fail to ignite during a crash, preventing the air bag from deploying.
  • Remedy: Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will replace the passenger air bag assembly free of charge.

In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the passenger frontal air bag, these inflators may rupture due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to absolute humidity and temperature cycling.
  • Remedy: Toyota Motor will notify the Toyota, Scion, and Lexus owners. General Motors will contact the Pontiac owners. Depending on the model, dealers will replace the passenger frontal air bag inflator or the air bag assembly free of charge.
  • Timing: Interim letters informing owners that parts are not yet available are expected to begin January 30, 2017. Owners will receive a second notice when remedy parts become available. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331, or Pontiac customer service at 1-800-762-2737.
