Recall Roundup: More Than One Half Million Hyundai Elantras, Kia Fortes Recalled for Braking System Issue

A defective brake pedal stopper pad is responsible for the recall of 390,467 Hyundai Elantra and 134,366 Kia Forte vehicles. Smaller recalls, for other issues, have been announced by Ford, Mazda, Mitsubishi, Toyota, and Volkswagen.

2018 Ford Expedition Vehicles

  • Number of vehicles affected: 462
  • Issue: The second-row outboard seats may have excessive forward adjustment capability and/or may have an improperly installed bolt that secures the seat back to the seat base..
  • Remedy: Ford will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the second-row outboard seats for proper seat adjustment travel, replacing the seat frame assembly if necessary. Dealers will also inspect the bolt attaching the seat back to the seat base for the proper installation, correcting it as necessary. These repairs will be made free of charge.
  • Timing: The recall is expected to begin January 8, 2018. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332.

2013-2014 Hyundai Elantra Sedan, Coupe, GT Vehicles

  • Number of vehicles affected: 390,467
  • Issue: The brake pedal stopper pad can deteriorate allowing the brake light switch plunger to remain extended when the brake pedal is released. This will allow the brake lights to remain illuminated continuously. It can also allow the shift lever to be moved without depressing the brake pedal, or activate the engine management brake pedal override feature.
  • Remedy: Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will replace the brake pedal stopper pad, free of charge.
  • Timing: The recall is expected to begin February 8, 2018. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-800-633-5151.

2012-2014 Kia Forte, Forte Koup Vehicles

  • Number of vehicles affected: 134,366
  • Issue: The brake pedal stopper pad can deteriorate allowing the brake light switch plunger to remain extended when the brake pedal is released. 2018 Mazda Mazda3 Vehicles

  • Number of vehicles affected: 144
  • Issue: An incorrect exhaust valve spring may fail while driving, potentially causing an engine stall.
  • Remedy: Mazda will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the engines and replace any incorrect exhaust valve springs, free of charge.
  • Timing: The recall is expected to begin January 20, 2018. Owners may contact Mazda customer service at 1-800-222-5500.

2016-2017 Mitsubishi i-MiEV Vehicles

  • Number of vehicles affected: 144
  • Issue: The affected vehicles are equipped with certain air bag inflators assembled as part of the passenger frontal air bag modules used as original equipment or replacement equipment. In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the passenger frontal air bag, these inflators may rupture due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to absolute humidity and temperature cycling.
  • Remedy: MMNA will notify owners, and dealers will replace the passenger side frontal air bag inflator, free of charge.
  • Timing: The recall is expected to begin December 15, 2017. Owners may contact Mitsubishi customer service at 1-888-648-7820.

2015-2018 Toyota 4Runner Vehicles

  • Number of vehicles affected: 431
  • Issue: The U-nut that secures the overlay grille may fracture, allowing the Billet Grille Overlay to detach from the vehicle.
  • Remedy: Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will replace the securing U-nuts with upgraded hardware, free of charge.
  • Timing: The recall is expected to begin January 26, 2018. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-866-405-4226.

2018 Volkswagen Atlas Vehicles

  • Number of vehicles affected: 58
  • Issue: The fuel tank may have been manufactured with insufficient wall thickness, potentially resulting in the tank leaking fuel.
  • Remedy: Volkswagen will notify owners, and dealers will replace the fuel tank, free of charge.
  • Timing: The recall is expected to begin December 29, 2017. Owners may contact Volkswagen customer service at 1-800-893-5298.
