During the past week, General Motors (GM), Fiat Chrysler Automobiles US (FCA US), Mitsubishi Motors North America, and American Honda issued recalls of a total of more than 59,000 light vehicles, from the 2015 and 2016 model years. The largest recall comes from Mitsubishi, involving 45,731 Outlander Sport SUVs from the 2015 model year. Details for each safety recall are on the pages that follow, in alphabetical order by car brand.

    • Number of vehicles affected: 534
    • Date of manufacture: October 27, 2015 to June 3, 2016
    • Issue: The affected vehicles have a shut-off switch for the high-voltage battery for use when servicing the vehicle. This manual service disconnect switch (MSD) may not be properly installed and thus may not lock into position, unexpectedly disconnecting the high-voltage power while driving, effectively stalling the vehicle.
    • Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the MSD and correct the installation, as necessary, free of charge.
    • Timing: The manufacturer has not yet provided a notification schedule. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020.
    • Manufacturer recall number: 51230
    • NHTSA recall number: 16V521000
  • 2016 Honda Civic Coupe photo

    • Number of vehicles affected: 11,846
    • Date of manufacture: February 23, 2016 through May 20, 2016
    • Issue: The affected vehicles may have a damaged LED side marker light circuit board inside the taillight assembly, making the marker light inoperable. If a side marker light does not function, vehicle visibility can be decreased to other drivers, increasing the risk of a crash.
    • Remedy: Honda will notify owners, and dealers will inspect both the taillight assemblies, replacing them as necessary, free of charge.
    • Timing: The recall is expected to begin in August 2016. Owners may contact Honda customer service at 1-888-234-2138.
    • Manufacturer recall number: KB8
    • NHTSA recall number: 16V526000

    • Number of vehicles affected: 45,731
    • Date of manufacture: June 25, 2014 through November 25, 2015
    • Issue: During assembly, a clamp for a CVT hose may not have been properly secured, allowing the hose to detach and leak transmission fluid. If enough transmission fluid leaks out, the transmission may not function properly and the vehicle may become inoperable, increasing the risk of a crash. Additionally, if leaking transmission fluid contacts a hot surface there is an increased risk of a fire.
    • Remedy: Mitsubishi will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the hose clamps, correcting their installation, as necessary, free of charge.
    • Timing: The manufacturer has not yet provided a notification schedule. Owners may contact Mitsubishi customer service at 1-888-648-7820.
    • Manufacturer recall number: SR-16-005
    • NHTSA recall number: 16V548000

    • Number of vehicles affected: 889
    • Date of manufacture: July 24, 2015 to January 7, 2016
    • Issue: The transfer case may have been manufactured with a misshapen main output shaft, creating voids that may cause a shaft fracture. If the main output shaft fractures, the vehicle may lose motive power, increasing the risk of a crash. Additionally, the driver may be unable to place the vehicle in PARK, increasing the risk of a vehicle rollaway.
    • Remedy: FCA will notify owners, and dealers will replace the transfer case free of charge.
    • Timing: The recall is expected to begin on August 10, 2016. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403.
    • Manufacturer recall number: S48
    • NHTSA recall number: 16V495000
