Recall Roundup: Mercedes SL Heading Back to Dealers

By Jeff Youngs, December 09, 2013
This past week, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) issued a single recall, one affecting 130 owners of the 2013 Mercedes-Benz SL550, SL63 AMG, and SL65 AMG. In these models, assembled between January 16, 2013, and April 30, 2013, the occupant classification system (OCS) in the front passenger's seat may not detect a very light person who may be seated there.

The OCS is equipped with sensors that determine whether or not it would be necessary to deploy the front passenger's air bag in a collision. If these sensors inaccurately determine whether the seat is occupied, a very light person may be put at additional risk in the event of a crash because the air bag will not deploy.

Mercedes-Benz is notifying the affected vehicle owners and will replace the front passenger's seat cushion with a new one that contains a more sensitive OCS. The recall, NHTSA campaign ID number 13V542, will be conducted in December of 2013. Owners with questions can contact Mercedes-Benz at 1-201-573-0600.
