Recall Roundup: Mercedes Announces 7 Recalls, but Mazda Recalls More Vehicles

During the past week, several auto manufacturers announced multiple recalls of light passenger vehicles, including Mercedes-Benz USA (7) and BMW of North America (3). However, the largest recall in terms of number of units came from Mazda North American Operations, which recalled 173,859 cars from the 2011 model year. Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA), Jaguar Land Rover, Automobili Lamborghini, Suzuki Motor of America, and Volkswagen Group of America also issued recalls.

Details for each safety recall are on the pages that follow, in alphabetical order by car brand.

2014-2017 BMW i3 REx Hybrid
  • Number of vehicles affected: 19,130
  • Issue: The fuel tank vent line may rub against the ribbed wire protection sleeve of the battery positive (B+) cable, creating a hole in the vent line and causing a fuel vapor leak.
  • Remedy: BMW will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the fuel vent line, replacing it as necessary, and install a clip to prevent it from chafing, free of charge.
  • Timing: The recall is expected to begin April 3, 2017. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

Various 2011-2012 BMW Vehicles

  • Number of vehicles affected: 8,752
  • Issue: In the affected 2011-2012 BMW 135i Coupe, 1 Series M Coupe, and 135i Convertible vehicles; 2011 Z4 sDrive 35i, 335i, 335d, 335i Coupe, 335is Coupe, 335i Convertible, 335is Convertible, 535i, 535i xDrive, 535i Gran Turismo, and 550i xDrive Gran Turismo vehicles; and 2012 740i and 740Li vehicles, the rear driveshaft constant velocity (CV) joint may fatigue and break.
  • Remedy: BMW will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the rear driveshaft CV joint and, based on its production date, will replace it free of charge.
  • Timing: The recall is expected to begin March 27, 2017. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

2014 BMW X1

  • Number of vehicles affected: 1,160
  • Issue: The affected 2014 X1 sDrive28i, X1 xDrive28i and X1 xDrive35i vehicles may have battery positive (B+) cables that develop high resistance in the connections to the fuse box.
  • Remedy: BMW will notify owners, and dealers will replace the B+ cable connector with one that is silver coated and better secure it to the fuse box, free of charge.
  • Timing: The recall is expected to begin April 3, 2017. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

2014-2017 Chrysler 300
2014-2017 Dodge Charger

  • Number of vehicles affected: 69,298
  • Issue: The front driveshaft bolts may loosen and allow the front driveshaft to disconnect, potentially causing a loss of motive power.
  • Remedy: FCA will notify owners, and dealers will replace all eight front driveshaft bolts free of charge.
  • Timing: The recall is expected to begin March 31, 2017. Owners may contact FCA customer service at 1-800-853-1403.

2017 Jaguar XF

  • Number of vehicles affected: 9
  • Issue: The affected vehicles may have a cracked left-hand inner sill panel. In the event of a crash involving a left-hand impact, the cracked sill panel may result in the underfloor fuel lines rupturing and leaking fuel.
  • Remedy: Jaguar will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the vehicle's left inner sill panel. If cracks are found, Jaguar will repurchase the vehicle and supply the customer with a new vehicle free of charge.
  • Timing: The recall is expected to begin April 7, 2017. Owners may contact Jaguar customer service at 1-800-452-4827.

2012-2017 Lamborghini Aventador

  • Number of vehicles affected: 1,453
  • Issue: In certain driving conditions while the vehicle has a full gas tank, gasoline may contact the exhaust system.
  • Remedy: Lamborghini will notify owners, and dealers will upgrade the fuel tank's evaporative emissions system free of charge.
  • Timing: The recall is expected to begin February 24, 2017. Owners may contact Lamborghini customer service at 1-866-681-6276.

2011 Mazda 2
2010-2011 Mazda 3, Mazdaspeed 3

  • Number of vehicles affected: 173,859
  • Date of manufacture: The recall affects vehicles from the 2010 and 2011 model years.
  • Issue: The seat-height adjustment lifter links may break or detach from the seat frame and the seat angle may incline, causing the driver to not be able to maintain an appropriate driving position.
  • Remedy: Mazda will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the seat lifter links and install a reinforcement bracket to the lifter links, or replace the entire seat adjuster unit, free of charge.
  • Timing: The recall is expected to begin March 31, 2017. Owners may contact Mazda customer service at 1-800-222-5500.

2017 Mercedes-Benz E300, E300 4Matic, E43 AMG

  • Number of vehicles affected: 12,456
  • Issue: The front passenger occupant detection control unit may have been incorrectly installed. As a result, the front passenger seat occupant may be misclassified. For example, an adult may be misclassified as a child seat, causing the front passenger air bag to be deactivated in the event of a crash.
  • Remedy: Mercedes-Benz will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the routing of the pressure hose of the seat occupancy detection control unit and replace the pressure hose and seat occupancy detection mat if necessary, free of charge.
  • Timing: The recall is expected to begin in early March 2017. Owners may contact Mercedes-Benz customer service at 1-800-367-6372.

2017 Mercedes-Benz E300, E300 4Matic

  • Number of vehicles affected: 73
  • Issue: The affected vehicles may have a damaged steering column-mounted shift lever module. If the internal circuit board is damaged, moving the shift lever will not select a transmission gear.
  • Remedy: Mercedes-Benz will notify owners, and dealers will replace the steering column-mounted shift lever module free of charge.
  • Timing: The recall is expected to begin in March 2017. Owners may contact Mercedes-Benz customer service at 1-800-367-6372.

2017 Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class
2017 Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class

  • Number of vehicles affected: 5,882
  • Issue: Mercedes-Benz is recalling certain 2017 GLE400 4Matic, GLE350 4Matic, GLE350, GLE550E 4Matic, GLE63 AMG, GLE63S AMG, GLE43 AMG 4Matic Coupe, GLE63S AMG 4Matic Coupe, GLS450 4Matic, GLS550 4Matic, and GLS63 AMG 4Matic vehicles. In certain types of crash events, the center console may unlatch, allowing the objects within to fly around the cabin.
  • Remedy: Mercedes-Benz will notify owners, and dealers will modify the center console so that it remains latched in a crash, free of charge.
  • Timing: The recall is expected to begin in early March 2017. Owners may contact Mercedes-Benz customer service at 1-800-367-6372.

2016 Mercedes-Benz GLS450 4Matic

  • Number of vehicles affected: 4
  • Issue: The windshield bonding may be insufficient and, as a result, the windshield may separate from the vehicle in a crash.
  • Remedy: Mercedes-Benz will notify owners, and dealers will replace the windshield free of charge.
  • Timing: The manufacturer has not yet provided a notification schedule. Owners may contact Mercedes-Benz customer service at 1-800-367-6372.

Various 2017 Mercedes-Benz Vehicles

  • Number of vehicles affected: 1,051
  • Issue: Mercedes-Benz is recalling certain 2017 CLA250, CLA250 4Matic, E400 Coupe, E400 4Matic Coupe, E550 Coupe, E400 Cabriolet, E550 Cabriolet, E300, E300 4Matic, E400 Wagon, GLA250, and GLA250 4Matic vehicles. The pelvis air bag or the front passenger air bag inflator initiator may fail to ignite in the event of a crash.
  • Remedy: Mercedes-Benz will notify owners, and dealers will replace the affected air bag modules free of charge.
  • Timing: The recall is expected to begin in early March 2017. Owners may contact Mercedes-Benz customer service at 1-800-367-6372.

Various 2016 Mercedes-Benz Vehicles

  • Number of vehicles affected: 37
  • Issue: Mercedes-Benz is recalling certain 2016 GLE350 4Matic, GLE350, GLE350 4Matic Bluetec, GL450 4Matic, and GLE450 Coupe 4Matic vehicles. The bolt that connects the upper control arm and the axle stub may not have been properly tightened.
  • Remedy: Mercedes-Benz will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the tightness of the bolt connecting the upper control arm and the axle stub, replacing the upper control arm if necessary, free of charge.
  • Timing: The recall is expected to begin in early March 2017. Owners may contact Mercedes-Benz customer service at 1-800-367-6372.

2015 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 2500, 3500 Vans

  • Number of vehicles affected: 2
  • Issue: These vehicles were manufactured without a protective plate on the front of the gas tank and a foam ring at the filler neck.
  • Remedy: Daimler Vans USA will notify owners, and dealers will replace the fuel tank free of charge.
  • Timing: The manufacturer has not yet provided a notification schedule. Owners may contact Daimler Vans customer service at 1-877-762-8267.

2009-2013 Suzuki Grand Vitara

  • Number of vehicles affected: 791
  • Issue: The gear shift rear shaft may break, preventing the gears from being able to be changed.
  • Remedy: Suzuki will notify owners, and dealers will replace the gear shift rear shaft free of charge.
  • Timing: The recall is expected to begin March 1, 2017. Owners may contact Suzuki customer service at 1-800-934-0934.

2017 Volkswagen Passat

  • Number of vehicles affected: 1,007
  • Date of manufacture: August 11, 2016 through September 27, 2016
  • Issue: Brake fluid may leak slowly from some of the brake line connections, resulting in a low brake fluid level.
  • Remedy: Volkswagen will notify owners, and dealers will replace the affected brake lines free of charge.
  • Timing: The recall is expected to begin in March 2017. Owners may contact Volkswagen customer service at 1-800-893-5298.
