Recall Roundup: Mazda, Hyundai Recall More Than a Half Million Vehicles Combined

Several automakers issued vehicle recalls in the closing weeks of 2015, affecting approximately 622,000 vehicles. The largest of these recalls comes from Mazda, which has recalled a total of 374,519 vehicles from the 2003-2008 model years. Also, Hyundai has recalled about 155,000 vehicles from the 2011 and 2012 model years. Details for each vehicle recall are below, in alphabetical order by car brand.


2016 Buick Enclave
2016 Chevrolet Traverse
2016 GMC Acadia
  • Number of vehicles affected: 2,633
  • Date of manufacture: November 6, 2015 to November 12, 2015
  • Issue: Welds in the third-row left lower seat frame may not be in the correct location.
  • Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the third-row left side lower seat frame, replacing it as necessary, free of charge.
  • Timing: The manufacturer has not yet provided a notification schedule. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020, GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782, or Buick customer service at 1-800-521-7300.
  • Manufacturer recall number: 21930
  • NHTSA recall number: 15V824000
  • Number of vehicles affected: 1,170
  • Date of manufacture: May 1, 2015 to June 26, 2015
  • Issue: A left or right rear axle drive shaft that may fracture, resulting in loss of drive power. Additionally, the vehicle may unexpectedly roll if it is parked without the parking brake applied.
  • Remedy: Ford will notify owners, and dealers will replace the left and right axle drive shafts free of charge.
  • Timing: The recall is expected to begin February 8, 2016. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332.

2011-2012 Hyundai Elantra
  • Number of vehicles affected: 155,000
  • Date of manufacture: October 29, 2010 to October 25, 2011
  • Issue: Due to an electronic stability control (ESC) sensor malfunction, the brakes for one or more wheels may be applied unexpectedly and the engine power may be reduced. These symptoms will be accompanied by illumination of the ESC indicator lamp in the instrument cluster. If one or more of the brakes are inappropriately applied, control of the vehicle may be lost, increasing the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will verify the proper operation of the ESC sensors, and update the ESC system's calibration free of charge.
  • Timing: The recall is expected to begin February 19, 2016. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-800-633-5151.

2015 Jeep Compass
2015 Jeep Patriot
  • Number of vehicles affected: 60,107
  • Date of manufacture: January 1 to May 11, 2015
  • Issue: During assembly, the power steering hose retention clamp may have been installed at an incorrect location, resulting in the detachment of the low-pressure return hose. If the power steering fluid return hose detaches, it would leak fluid and increase the risk of a fire.
  • Remedy: Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the return power steering hose clamp, repositioning the clamp as necessary, free of charge.
  • Timing: The manufacturer has not yet provided a notification schedule. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403.

2016 Maserati Granturismo, Granturismo Convertible
  • Number of vehicles affected: 33
  • Date of manufacture: September 1, 2015 to November 30, 2015
  • Issue: A non-galvanized main fuel delivery line may corrode and result in a fuel leak. A fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source can increase the risk of a fire.
  • Remedy: Maserati will notify owners, and dealers will replace the main delivery fuel line free of charge.
  • Timing: The recall began on January 7, 2016. Owners may contact Maserati customer service at 1-201-816-2600.

2003-2008 Mazda 6
2003-2008 Mazdaspeed 6
2003-2008 Mazda RX-8
  • Number of vehicles affected: 374,519
  • Date of manufacture: May 29, 2002 to May 5, 2008
  • Issue: The inflators in the front passenger air bags are susceptible to rupture in the event of a crash necessitating the deployment of the front passenger air bag. In the event of a rupture, metal fragments could strike the vehicle occupants, potentially resulting in serious injury or death.
  • Remedy: Mazda will notify owners, and dealers will replace the passenger's frontal air bag with a new one free of charge.
  • Timing: This recall supersedes recalls 13V-130 and 14V-362 in their entirety. This recall partially supersedes recall 14V-773 in that model-year 2003-2006 Mazda 6 vehicles covered by that recall are now covered by this campaign. Owners may contact Mazda customer service at 1-800-222-5500.

2015 Mercedes-Benz C300, C400 4matic Sedan
  • Number of vehicles affected: 28,452
  • Date of manufacture: January 27, 2014 to December 1, 2014
  • Issue: Due to an error in the electric power steering control unit software, a loss of electric power steering assist may occur. If the vehicle experiences a loss of power steering assist, extra steering effort will be required, especially at lower speeds, increasing the risk of a vehicle crash.
  • Remedy: Mercedes-Benz will notify owners, and dealers will update the power steering software free of charge.
  • Timing: The recall is expected to begin in January 2016. Owners may contact Mercedes-Benz customer service at 1-800-367-6372.
