Recall Roundup: Jeep Cherokee SUV Recalled to Address Power Liftgate Control Module
By Joseph Dobrian, December 21, 2015
During the past week, several automakers, including BMW, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, Mitsubishi, and Nissan, recalled a total of about 58,000 vehicles, all from the 2014, 2015, and 2016 model years. Details for each vehicle recall are below, in alphabetical order by car brand.
2016 BMW M4 Coupe
2015-2015 BMW M4 Convertible
BMW of North America (BMW) is recalling a total of 42 vehicles, including model-year 2015-2016 M3 sedans manufactured May 30, 2015, to September 2, 2015; 2016 M4 coupes manufactured July 3, 2015, to September 11, 2015; and 2015-2016 M4 convertibles manufactured May 29, 2015, to August 4, 2015. The affected vehicles have a driveshaft with a slip-joint that may not have been filled with grease. As a result, the slip-joint may fail over time. If the slip-joint fails, there would be a loss of power to the rear axle and the vehicle would stop moving.
BMW will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the driveshaft, replacing it as necessary, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin January 8, 2016. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417, and may refer to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) campaign number 15V782000.
Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (Chrysler) is recalling 32,784 model-year 2015-2016 Jeep Cherokee SUVs manufactured February 18, 2015, to September 10, 2015 and equipped with the power liftgate option. In the affected vehicles, water may leak into the power liftgate control module and result in a high-resistance short circuit. A short circuit in the module increases the risk of a fire.
Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the module and connectors for corrosion, replacing the damaged components as necessary. The mastic shield will be removed and the module will be covered with a water shield. These repairs will be performed free of charge to the vehicle owner. The manufacturer has not yet provided a notification schedule. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is R67; owners may also refer to NHTSA campaign number 15V826000.
Mitsubishi Motors North America (Mitsubishi) is recalling 25,185 model-year 2014-2015 Mitsubishi Mirage vehicles manufactured August 7, 2013, to September 2, 2015 and originally sold in, or ever registered in, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and the District of Columbia. If the driver enters an affected vehicle with boots covered with snow mixed with road salt, the melting snow may soak through the carpet and cause corrosion to a wiring connector located in a junction box behind a kick panel to the left of the driver's footrest. In the event of a crash, corrosion of the connector could delay deployment of the frontal air bags, increasing the risk of injury to the driver and the front passenger.
Mitsubishi will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the affected connectors, replacing any found to be corroded. A waterproof sheet will be installed over the connectors to prevent future corrosion. These repairs will be performed free of charge to the vehicle owner. The manufacturer has not yet provided a notification schedule. Owners may contact Mitsubishi customer service at 1-888-648-7820. Mitsubishi's number for this recall is SR-16-001; owners may also refer to NHTSA campaign number 15V815000.
Nissan North America (Nissan) is recalling 18 model-year 2015-2016 GT-R vehicles manufactured February 24, 2014, to June 16, 2015 to be sold in Puerto Rico. The affected vehicles have a certification label that is missing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) and gross axle weight rating (GAWR) information. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of 49 CFR Part 567: Certification. Due to the label missing the GVWR/GAWR information, the operator may overload the vehicle.
Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will apply a corrected label free of charge. The recall is expected to begin during December 2015. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-647-7261, and may refer to NHTSA campaign number 15V795000.
BMW, parent company of Rolls-Royce, is recalling 13 model-year 2015-2016 Rolls-Royce Phantom vehicles manufactured May 22, 2015, to September 23, 2015. The affected vehicles have left and right side curtain air bags that may not have been manufactured properly, and thus might not position themselves as intended during deployment, increasing the risk of occupant injury in a crash.
BMW will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and replace the side curtain air bags, as necessary, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin January 11, 2016. Owners may contact Rolls-Royce customer relations at 1-877-877-3735, and may refer to NHTSA campaign number 15V787000.
