Recall Roundup: Hyundai to Fix Seat Belts on Nearly 1 Million Sonata, Sonata Hybrid Sedans

During the past week, several automakers issued recalls totaling approximately 1,030,000 light passenger vehicles, going back as far as the 2007 model year. The largest recall comes from Hyundai Motor America, which is recalling 977,778 Hyundai Sonata and Sonata Hybrid vehicles from the 2011 through 2015 model years.

2017 Audi A5 Cabriolet, S5 Cabriolet

  • Number of vehicles affected: 1,676
  • Issue: A component within the front, rear, and rear center seat belt retractor pre-tensioners may detach after the seat belt retractor pre-tensioner is deployed in the event of a crash.
  • Remedy: Audi will notify owners, and dealers will replace the safety belt retractors/pre-tensioners free of charge.
  • Timing: The recall is expected to begin in May 2017. Owners may contact Audi customer service at 1-800-253-2834.

2017 Fiat 500X

  • Number of vehicles affected: 27,531
  • Issue: When the vehicle has a tire with low tire pressure, the tire-pressure monitoring system (TPMS) warning light may not illuminate.
  • Remedy: Fiat will notify owners, and dealers will update the instrument panel software free of charge.
  • Timing: The recall is expected to begin April 21, 2017. Owners may contact Fiat Chrysler Automobiles customer service at 1-800-853-1403.

2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport

  • Number of vehicles affected: 190
  • Issue: The tire-pressure monitoring system (TPMS) may not have been set in the correct mode during vehicle assembly, and therefore will not provide an appropriate warning in the event of an underinflated tire.
  • Remedy: Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will replace the TPMS sensors free of charge.
  • Timing: The recall is expected to being March 31, 2017. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-800-633-5151.

2011-2014 Hyundai Sonata
2011-2015 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid

  • Number of vehicles affected: 977,778
  • Issue: The seat belt linkages for both front seat belts may detach from the seat belt anchor pre-tensioners.
  • Remedy: Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the connection between the seat belt linkages and the seat belt anchor pre-tensioners, repairing them as necessary, free of charge.
  • Timing: The recall is expected to begin April 7, 2017. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460.

2017 Infiniti QX30

  • Number of vehicles affected: 79
  • Issue: The driver-side curtain air bag inflator initiator may fail to ignite during a crash, preventing the air bag from deploying.
  • Remedy: Infiniti will notify owners, and dealers will replace the driver-side curtain air bag assembly free of charge.
  • Timing: The recall is expected to begin in March 2017. Owners may contact Infiniti customer Service at 1-800-662-6200.

2017 Jaguar F-Pace

  • Number of vehicles affected: 25
  • Issue: The rear drive shaft may be too short, potentially resulting in it separating from the vehicle.
  • Remedy: Jaguar will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the drive shafts, replacing any that are incorrect, free of charge.
  • Timing: The recall is expected to begin May 1, 2017. Owners may contact Jaguar customer service at 1-800-452-4827.

2016 Land Rover Range Rover
2016 Land Rover Range Rover Sport

  • Number of vehicles affected: 205
  • Issue: The passenger frontal air bag inflator initiator may fail to ignite during a crash.
  • Remedy: Land Rover will notify owners, and dealers will replace the front passenger air bag free of charge.
  • Timing: The recall is expected to begin May 1, 2017. Owners may contact Land Rover customer service at 1-800-637-6837.

2016-2017 Mercedes-Benz Metris

  • Number of vehicles affected: 72
  • Issue: These vans were to be equipped with the blind-spot monitoring (BSM) feature. However, the installed instrument cluster and steering wheel does not support the function, and thus, the BSM system does not work on the vehicle.
  • Remedy: Mercedes-Benz will notify owners, and dealers will install the correct instrument cluster and steering wheel to enable the BSM function free of charge.
  • Timing: The manufacturer has not yet provided a notification schedule. Owners may contact Mercedes-Benz customer service at 1-877-762-8267.

2016 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 2500, 3500

  • Number of vehicles affected: 1,248
  • Issue: The bracket for the center support bearing of the drive shaft may not have been properly welded.
  • Remedy: Mercedes-Benz will notify owners and dealers will install three additional rivets to secure the bracket free of charge.
  • Timing: The manufacturer has not yet provided a notification schedule. Owners may contact Mercedes-Benz customer service at 1-877-762-8267.
  • NHTSA recall number: 17V149000


2007-2010 Volkswagen Touareg

  • Number of vehicles affected: 20,908
  • Issue: The fuel filter flange may crack and allow fuel to leak out.
  • Remedy: Volkswagen will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and replace the fuel filter flange if cracks are found. A protective cover will be applied to the fuel filter to prevent oxidization cracks from forming. These repairs will be made free of charge to the vehicle owner.
  • Timing: The recall is expected to begin in May 2017. Owners may contact Volkswagen customer service at 1-800-893-5298.
