Recall Roundup: Hyundai to Fix More Than 200K Elantras with Defective Power Steering Control Units

By Jeff Youngs,

During the past week, several automakers including Hyundai Motor, Fiat-Chrysler Automobiles, General Motors, Jaguar Land Rover, Kia Motors, Mercedes-Benz, and Toyota Motor, recalled a total of more than 300,000 vehicles. The largest recall is that of 204,768 Hyundai Elantra and Elantra Touring vehicles from the 2008-2010 model years to address a faulty power steering control unit. Details for each recall are below, in alphabetical order by vehicle brand.

2013-2015 Cadillac ATS
General Motors (GM) is recalling 58,698 model-year 2013-2015 Cadillac ATS vehicles manufactured April 25, 2012, to February 9, 2015. In the affected vehicles, the power-operated roof panels auto-close when the non-recessed "Slide" or "Tilt" switches are pressed. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 118: Power-Operated Window, Partition, and Roof Panel Systems. Because the switch is not recessed, the roof panel switch may inadvertently be pressed, resulting in unintended auto-closure of the roof panel, increasing the risk of personal injury.

GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the roof console accessory switch trim plate free of charge. The manufacturer has not yet provided a notification schedule. Owners may contact Cadillac customer service at 1-800-458-8006. GM's number for this recall is 15119; owners may also refer to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) campaign number 15V106000.

2014 Chevrolet Impala
GM is recalling 1,177 model-year 2014 Chevrolet Impala vehicles manufactured November 15, 2012, to May 27, 2014. In the affected vehicles, the electronic parking brake piston actuation arm may not fully retract, causing the brake pads to stay partially engaged. Thus, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of FMVSS No. 135: Light Vehicle Brake Systems. Brake pads that remain partially engaged with the rotors may cause excessive brake heat, which may result in a fire.

GM will notify owners, and dealers will reprogram the electronic parking brake control module with new software, free of charge. The manufacturer has not yet provided a notification schedule. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020. GM's number for this recall is 15100; owners may also refer to NHTSA campaign number 15V085000. Note: This recall covers a limited population of vehicles that were remedied incorrectly under recall 14V-541.

2015 Chrysler 200
Fiat-Chrysler Automobiles (Chrysler) is recalling 25,734 model-year 2015 Chrysler 200 vehicles manufactured March 9, 2014, to December 15, 2014, and equipped with a 9-speed automatic transmission. The automatic transmission parking pawl may become contaminated, or the park rod may become dislodged or broken. This may prevent the transmission from shifting into the Park position. If the shift indicator displays "Park" but the park lock does not engage, the vehicle may roll away.

Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the transmission. Any transmission found with contamination of a park rod will be replaced, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin on April 10, 2015. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is R08; owners may also refer to NHTSA campaign number 15V090000.

2008-2010 Hyundai Elantra
2009-2010 Hyundai Elantra Touring
Hyundai Motor (Hyundai) is recalling 204,768 model-year 2008-2010 Elantra vehicles manufactured June 1, 2008, to April 30, 2010, and 2009-2010 Elantra Touring vehicles manufactured November 1, 2008, to April 30, 2010. The electric power steering (EPS) electronic control unit (ECU) may sense a discrepancy in the steering input signals and, as a result, disable the steering power assist. If power steering assist is lost, greater driver effort would be required to steer the vehicle at low speeds, increasing the risk of a crash.

Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will verify the proper operation of the EPS and update the control unit, free of charge. The manufacturer has not yet provided a notification schedule. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-671-3059. Hyundai's number for this recall is 127; owners may also refer to NHTSA campaign number 15V100000.

2013 Jaguar XF
Jaguar Land Rover (Jaguar) is recalling 355 model-year 2013 XF vehicles manufactured September 11, 2012, to October 8, 2012. The electronic modules which control the fuel pump may shut down, causing the fuel pump to stop pumping fuel, which would result in the vehicle stalling. The vehicle would also lose power-assisted braking and steering. Any of these conditions may increase the risk of a vehicle crash.

Jaguar will notify owners, and dealers will inspect, and install if necessary, an additional wiring harness to the in-tank fuel pump, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin April 17, 2015. Owners may contact Jaguar customer service at 1-800-452-4827. Jaguar's number for this recall is J051; owners may also refer to NHTSA campaign number 15V091000.

2016 Kia Sorento
Kia Motors is recalling 12,361 model-year 2016 Sorento vehicles manufactured October 27, 2014, to January 29, 2015. Due to an improperly soldered component in the accelerator pedal assembly, the driver may not be able to accelerate the vehicle.

Kia will notify owners, and dealers will replace the accelerator assembly, free of charge. The recall began on February 19, 2015. Owners may contact Kia customer service at 1-800-333-4542. Kia's number for this recall is SC115; owners may also refer to NHTSA campaign number 15V089000.

2015 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 2500/3500
Mercedes-Benz (Mercedes) is recalling 5,586 model-year 2015 Sprinter 2500 and 3500 vehicles manufactured July 1, 2014, to October 14, 2014. In the affected vehicles, the abutting wedge, a component attached to the door jamb to make opening the door easier after a severe frontal impact, may have been installed incorrectly. If a vehicle that has an incorrectly installed abutting wedge is involved in a severe frontal accident, a greater force may be necessary to open the doors, increasing the risk of injury.

Mercedes will notify owners, and dealers will check the installation of the abutting wedge, correcting it as necessary, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin in March 2015. Owners may contact Mercedes customer service at 1-877-762-8267, and may refer to NHTSA campaign number 15V082000.

2014 Toyota FJ Cruiser
Toyota Motor (Toyota) is recalling 116 model-year 2014 FJ Cruiser vehicles manufactured August 7, 2013, to August 20, 2013. In the affected vehicles, the intermediate steering shaft that connects the steering wheel and the steering gear box may have an inadequate weld. If the weld fails, loss of steering control would result.

Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will replace the intermediate steering shaft free of charge. The recall is expected to begin in March 2015. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331, and may refer to NHTSA campaign number 15V081000.
