Recall Roundup: GM Recalls Chevy Silverado, GMC Sierra for Seat Belt Issue

By Joseph Dobrian, April 26, 2016
During the past week, more than 950,000 vehicles were recalled by Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA), General Motors (GM), Nissan North America, and Toyota Motor. The largest of these recalls comes from GM, and concerns the seat belt tensioners in nearly 900,000 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 trucks from the 2014 and 2015 model years. Details for each safety recall are below, in alphabetical order by car brand.

2014-2015 Chevrolet Silverado 1500
2014-2015 GMC Sierra 1500
  • Number of vehicles affected: 895,232
  • Date of manufacture: January 29, 2013 to January 21, 2015
  • Issue: While entering the vehicle, the seat belt tensioner cable may be positioned such that the driver slides over it. This movement may result in the fatigue and separation of the cable.
  • Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will modify the vehicles to prevent the tensioner from being damaged. Any tensioner that has already been damaged will be replaced free of charge.
  • Timing: The manufacturer has not yet provided a notification schedule. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020 or GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782.
  • Manufacturer recall number: 15822
  • NHTSA recall number: 16V209000

2016 Lexus ES 350
2016 Lexus RX 350
2016 Toyota RAV4
  • Number of vehicles affected: 16,656
  • Date of manufacture: September 1, 2015 to February 29, 2016
  • Issue: The ABS actuator may have a damaged O-ring, which could result in improper brake fluid pressure control during ABS, traction control, or stability control activation. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 126: Electronic Stability Control Systems.
  • Remedy: Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the brake actuator, replacing it as necessary, free of charge.
  • Timing: The recall is expected to begin June 5, 2016. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331.
  • Manufacturer recall numbers: G01, GLC
  • NHTSA recall number: 16V198000

2016 Nissan Murano
2016 Nissan Maxima
  • Number of vehicles affected: 12,616
  • Date of manufacture: November 25, 2015 to February 12, 2016
  • Issue: On vehicles manufactured and equipped with ABS and Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC), the ABS actuator may have a damaged O-ring that may result in a lack of brake fluid pressure. Insufficient brake fluid pressure may lengthen the distance needed to stop the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and replace the ABS actuator, as necessary, free of charge.
  • Timing: The recall is expected to begin by June 4, 2016. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-647-7261.
  • NHTSA recall number: 16V193000
  • Number of vehicles affected: 26,867
  • Date of manufacture: September 26, 2014 to March 5, 2016
  • Issue: A low-voltage electrical harness connector by the front driver seat may be susceptible to water intrusion and corrosion. Corrosion may result in a loss of communication to the Transmission Control Module (TCM) and may cause the transmission to unexpectedly shift into and stay in neutral without warning the next time that the vehicle stops.
  • Remedy: Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will relocate the harness connector to under the instrument panel free of charge.
  • Timing: The manufacturer has not yet provided a notification schedule. Owners may contact FCA customer service at 1-800-853-1403.
  • Manufacturer recall number: S24
  • NHTSA recall number: 16V202000
  • Number of vehicles affected: 234
  • Date of manufacture: February 15, 2016 to February 19, 2016
  • Issue: Incorrect front seat belt height adjusters may have been installed. During a crash, this incorrect height adjuster may contact the B-pillar and tear or separate. Failure and detachment of the seat belt height adjuster would result in the occupant not being properly restrained in a crash, increasing their risk of injury.
  • Remedy: Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will replace the front seat belt height adjusters free of charge.
  • The recall is expected to begin April 30, 2016. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331.
  • Manufacturer recall number: G0H
  • NHTSA recall number: 16V197000
