Recall Roundup: GM, Mitsubishi Recall Nearly One Half Million Vehicles Combined

By Joseph Dobrian, July 25, 2016
During the past week, General Motors (GM), Mazda, and Mitsubishi issued recalls of approximately 475,000 light vehicles, dating back to the 2002 model year. The largest recall involves nearly 300,000 Chevrolet Impala vehicles from the 2009 and 2010 model years, in which there’s a risk of damage to the passenger-presence sensor module. Details for each safety recall are below, in alphabetical order by car brand.

2013 Buick Encore
2011 Buick Regal
2013-2014 & 2016-2017 Buick Verano
2011-2016 Chevrolet Cruze
2010-2013 Chevrolet Equinox
2013-2016 Chevrolet Malibu
2011-2013 GMC Terrain
  • Number of vehicles affected: 7,620
  • Date of manufacture: Recall affects vehicles from the 2011-2017 model years.
  • Issue: GM is recalling certain model-year 2016-2017 Buick Verano and 2016 Chevrolet Malibu vehicles as the electronic park lock lever may allow the ignition key to be removed without the transmission being in “Park.” Also, certain 2013 Buick Encore, 2011 Buick Regal, 2013-2014 Buick Verano, 2011-2016 Chevrolet Cruze, 2010-2013 Chevrolet Equinox, 2013-2015 Chevrolet Malibu, and 2011-2013 GMC Terrain vehicles may have been serviced with similar defective replacement electronic park lock levers. If the key is removed without the transmission in “Park,” the vehicle may rollaway as occupants are exiting, increasing the risk of injury.
  • Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and, if necessary, replace the key cylinder lock housing, free of charge.
  • Timing: The manufacturer has not yet provided a notification schedule. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020, Buick at 1-800-521-7300, and GMC at 1-800-462-8782.
  • Manufacturer recall numbers: 50490 and 50491
  • NHTSA recall number: 16V502000
  • Number of vehicles affected: 289,254
  • Date of manufacture: April 25, 2008 through February 16, 2010
  • Issue: The front passenger-seat frame may contact and damage the wires of the passenger-presence sensor module. If the wires are damaged, the passenger-presence sensory system may fail to recognize that the passenger seat is occupied, disabling the air bag. Damage may also cause the air bag fuse to short, resulting in a loss of all air bags and seat belt pre-tensioners. Both conditions increase the risk of injury during a crash.
  • Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will double-wrap the wires with anti-abrasion tape and replace damaged wires as necessary, free of charge.
  • Timing: The manufacturer has not yet provided a notification schedule. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-521-7300.
  • Manufacturer recall number: 36110
  • NHTSA recall number: 16V507000

2007-2009 Mazda B-Series Trucks
  • Number of vehicles affected: 3,743
  • Date of manufacture: February 21, 2006 through January 22, 2009
  • Issue: In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the front air bags, the inflators may rupture due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to absolute humidity and temperature cycling. An inflator rupture may result in metal fragments striking the vehicle occupants, resulting in serious injury or death.
  • Remedy: Mazda will notify owners, and dealers will replace the passenger frontal air bag inflator free of charge.
  • Timing: The recall is expected to begin August 16, 2016. Owners may contact Mazda customer service at 1-800-222-5500.
  • Manufacturer recall number: 9616F
  • NHTSA recall number: 16V499000

2002-2007 Mitsubishi Lancer
2003-2006 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution
2004 Mitsubishi Lancer Wagon
2003-2006 Mitsubishi Outlander
2007-2013 Mitsubishi Outlander V-6
  • Number of vehicles affected: 174,382
  • Date of manufacture: Recall affects vehicles from the 2002-2013 model years.
  • Issue: Mitsubishi is recalling certain model-year 2002-2007 Lancer, 2004 Lancer Wagon, 2003-2006 Lancer Evolution, 2003-2006 Outlander, and 2007-2013 Outlander V-6 vehicles. In the affected vehicles, the front lower control arms may detach due to the front cross member corroding from salt water exposure such as from road salt use. A detached front control arm can result in the loss of control of the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: Mitsubishi will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the front cross members. Depending on the level of existing corrosion, either a sealing/anti-corrosion agent will be applied or the front cross member will be replaced with a new one that has a sealing/anti-corrosion agent applied to it. These repairs will be performed free of charge to the vehicle owner.
  • Timing: The manufacturer has not yet provided a notification schedule. Owners may contact Mitsubishi customer service at 1-888-648-7820.
  • Manufacturer recall number: SR-16-003
  • NHTSA recall number: 16V458000
