Recall Roundup: Ford Recalls Transit Van to Fix Curtain Air Bags; Tesla Model X, Bugatti Veyron Also Recalled

During the past week, automakers recalled approximately 48,000 vehicles, the vast majority being Ford Transit vans with incorrectly oriented curtain air bags. The recalls affect vehicles produced by various domestic and overseas manufacturers, from the 2006 through 2016 model years. Details for each safety recall are below, in alphabetical order by car brand.


2016 BMW 740Li, 750Li, 750Lxi
  • Number of vehicles affected: 6,110
  • Date of manufacture: July 1, 2015 to December 11, 2015
  • Issue: An air bag control module may randomly reset due to an electrical short circuit as a result of residual metallic particles from the manufacturing process. In the event of a crash while the air bag module is resetting, the air bags may not deploy, increasing the risk of occupant injury.
  • Remedy: BMW will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and replace the air bag module, as necessary, free of charge.
  • Timing: The recall is expected to begin May 16, 2016. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

2006-2008 Bugatti Veyron
  • Number of vehicles affected: 13
  • Date of manufacture: October 3, 2006 to December 22, 2006
  • Issue: The positive battery (B+) cable and the connection to the alternator may corrode. The corrosion may result in the battery positive cable overheating, increasing the risk of a fire.
  • Remedy: All affected vehicles have had the battery B+ cable and the alternator replaced, free of charge.
  • Timing: Owners may contact Bugatti at (805) 557-1050.

2006-2012 Bugatti Veyron, Veyron Grand Sport, Veyron Super Sport
  • Number of vehicles affected: 87
  • Date of manufacture: March 10, 2006 to October 14, 2014
  • Issue: The underbody aluminum reference plates used when lifting the vehicle may corrode and detach from the vehicle.
  • Remedy: Bugatti will notify owners, and dealers will rivet and seal the underbody aluminum reference plates free of charge.
  • Timing: The manufacturer has not yet provided a notification schedule. Owners may contact Bugatti at (805) 557-1050.

2006-2011 Bugatti Veyron, Veyron Grand Sport
  • Number of vehicles affected: 72
  • Date of manufacture: March 10, 2006 to June 30, 2010
  • Issue: The fuel tank gauge may indicate that there is more fuel in the tank than there actually is. The inaccurate gauge may cause a driver to unexpectedly run out of fuel.
  • Remedy: Bugatti will notify owners, and dealers will replace the fuel tank control unit and upgrade the software free of charge.
  • Timing: The manufacturer has not yet provided a notification schedule. Owners may contact Bugatti at (805) 557-1050.

2014-2016 Chevrolet Express
2014-2016 GMC Savana
  • Number of vehicles affected: 321
  • Date of manufacture: August 2, 2013 to January 30, 2016
  • Issue: The affected vehicles were shipped to final stage manufacturers without a tire-pressure monitoring system (TPMS). As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 138: Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems. Without a TPMS, the driver would not be alerted if one or more tires became under-inflated.
  • Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will install the hardware and software necessary to equip the vehicles with a TPMS free of charge.
  • Timing: The manufacturer has not yet provided a notification schedule. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020, or GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782.

2015-2016 Ford Explorer
2015-2016 Lincoln MKC
  • Number of vehicles affected: 1,543
  • Date of manufacture: November 25, 2013 to January 28, 2016
  • Issue: The affected vehicles are equipped with 2.3-liter GTDI engines and engine block heaters. These engine block heaters have elements that may overheat while plugged in. Overheating of the engine block increases the risk of a fire.
  • Remedy: Ford will notify owners, and dealers will replace the engine block heater free of charge. Dealers will also inspect and replace the electrical cord, as necessary.
  • Timing: The recall is expected to begin May 16, 2016. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332.
  • Manufacturer recall number: 16S14
  • NHTSA recall number: 16V183000
  • Number of vehicles affected: 37,066
  • Date of manufacture: March 12, 2014 to March 18, 2016
  • Issue: The side curtain air bag may not deploy with the proper trajectory due to being folded and packaged incorrectly.
  • Remedy: Ford will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and re-orient the side curtain air bag assembly, as necessary, free of charge.
  • Timing: The recall is expected to begin on May 16, 2016. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332.
  • Manufacturer recall number: 16S13
  • NHTSA recall number: 16V188000
  • Number of vehicles affected: 28
  • Date of manufacture: December 17, 2008 to April 15, 2009
  • Issue: The fuel tank outlet flange may crack, allowing fuel to leak onto the ground.
  • Remedy: Jaguar will notify owners, and dealers will replace the fuel outlet mounting flange free of charge.
  • Timing: The recall is expected to begin May 20, 2016. Owners may contact Jaguar customer service at 1-800-452-4827.
  • Manufacturer recall number: J059
  • NHTSA recall number: 16V187000
  • Number of vehicles affected: 2,666
  • Date of manufacture: September 29, 2015 to March 30, 2016
  • Issue: The third-row seat back may move forward under load, such as in a frontal collision. As such, the vehicles do not conform to FMVSS No. 207: Seating Systems. If the third-row seat does not remain in its adjusted position, there may be an increased risk of injury to an occupant in the event of a crash.
  • Remedy: Tesla will notify owners, and dealers will replace all affected third-row seats free of charge.
  • Timing: The recall is expected to begin in April 2016. Owners may contact Tesla customer service at 1-844-248-3752 or by email at ServiceHelpNA@teslamotors.com.
