During the past week, several auto manufacturers issued recalls of light passenger vehicles. Approximately 655,000 vehicles are affected, with the largest recall coming from Ford Motor Company: 603,392 Ford Fusion and Lincoln MKZ sedans from the 2013-2016 model years. Hyundai Motor America, BMW of North America, Maserati North America, and Mercedes-Benz USA also issued recalls. Details for each safety recall are on the pages that follow, in alphabetical order by car brand.

    • Number of vehicles affected: 91
    • Date of manufacture: March 1, 2010 to August 31, 2010
    • Issue: BMW is recalling certain model-year 2011 BMW 528i, 528xi, 535i, 535xi, 550i, and 550xi vehicles. The affected vehicles may have received a replacement sensor cluster unit (SCU) during a service visit. These SCUs have an acceleration sensor that may have been incorrectly programmed and, as a result, the SCU may not accurately determine if activation and deployment of the air bags, safety belt pre-tensioners, and head restraints is necessary in the event of a crash. Depending on the severity of the crash, inadequate activation of the driver and/or passenger air bags, safety belt pre-tensioners, and active head restraints may increase the risk of injury.
    • Remedy: BMW will notify owners, and dealers will replace the SCU free of charge.
    • Timing: The recall is expected to begin in December 2016. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

    • Timing: Owners will be notified of the safety issue beginning on January 20, 2017. Remedy parts are expected to be available by the second quarter of 2017, and at that time, owners will be mailed a second notice. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332.
