Recall Roundup: Ford Recalls 400,000 Vehicles Over Engine Coolant, Door Latch Issues

During the past week, Ford Motor Co. (Ford) issued two recalls that affect a total of just over 400,000 light passenger vehicles, from the 2013, 2014, and 2015 model years. In addition, Kia Motor America (Kia) and Mercedes-Benz USA issued recalls that affect a total of 2,402 vehicles.

2014 Ford Escape
2014-2015 Ford Fiesta ST
2013-2014 Ford Fusion
2013-2015 Ford Transit Connect

  • Number of vehicles affected: 208,584
  • Issue: Ford is recalling certain 2014 Escape, 2014-2015 Fiesta ST, 2013-2014 Fusion, and 2013-2015 Transit Connect vehicles equipped with 1.6-liter GTDI engines. If an affected vehicle is started and driven with an insufficient level of coolant within the engine cooling system, the engine cylinder head may overheat, crack, and leak oil.
  • Remedy: Ford will notify owners, and dealers will install a coolant level sensor and the supporting hardware and software free of charge.
  • Timing: Remedy parts are currently unavailable. Interim notices informing owners of the safety risk are expected to be mailed April 18, 2017. Owners will receive a second notice when remedy parts become available, currently expected to be in late 2017. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332.

2013-2014 Ford Fiesta
2013-2014 Ford Fusion
2013-2014 Lincoln MKZ

  • Number of vehicles affected: 191,432
  • Issue: A component within the door latches may break, making the doors difficult to latch and/or leading the driver or a passenger to believe a door is securely closed when it may not be.
  • Remedy: Ford will notify owners, and dealers will replace all four door latches free of charge.
  • Timing: The recall is expected to begin May 1, 2017. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332.

2017 Kia Cadenza

  • Number of vehicles affected: 47
  • Issue: The brake vacuum hose may kink, reducing braking performance.
  • Remedy: Kia will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the brake vacuum hose, replacing it as necessary, free charge.
  • Timing: The recall is expected to begin April 17, 2017. Owners may contact Kia customer service at 1-800-333-4542.

2017 Mercedes-Benz E300, E300 4Matic

  • Number of vehicles affected: 65
  • Issue: The front passenger air bag may not deploy properly if a front-seat passenger is sitting on the edge of the seat or is laying in the seat with the seat reclined.
  • Remedy: Mercedes-Benz will notify owners, and dealers will update the air bag control module software free of charge.
  • Timing: The recall is expected to begin in April 2017. Owners can contact Mercedes customer service at 1-800-367-6372.

Various 2008-2017 Mercedes-Benz Vehicles

  • Number of vehicles affected: 51
  • Issue: Mercedes-Benz is recalling certain 2016 AMG GT-S, GLC300, CLA250 and GLE300d 4Matic; 2013 C250, E350 BlueTec, and G63 AMG; 2008-2014 C300; 2013-2014 C300 4Matic and ML350 4Matic; 2009 C350; 2014 CLS550, E350 4Matic, E350 Coupe 4Matic, E350 Wagon 4Matic, GLK350, and SL550; 2012 CLS550 4Matic; 2012-2016 E350; 2016-2017 GL450 4Matic; 2012-2014 ML350 4Matic BlueTec; 2015 S550, S550 4Matic, and C300 4Matic Sedan; 2015-2016 C300 Sedan; and 2017 SL63 AMG vehicles. Various control units on these vehicles may have been updated with incorrect software, potentially affecting the correct deployment of the air bags in the event of a crash.
  • Remedy: Mercedes-Benz will notify owners, and dealers will update software in the affected control units free of charge.
  • Timing: The recall is expected to begin in April 2017. Owners can contact Mercedes customer service at 1-800-367-6372.

2016 Mercedes-Benz G550 4Matic, G63 AMG

  • Number of vehicles affected: 26
  • Issue: The cable that unlatches the door when the inner door handle is pulled may break if the door is difficult to release, such as could occur after a crash.
  • Remedy: Mercedes-Benz will notify owners and dealers will replace the cable that connects the inner door handle and the door lock on all four doors free of charge.
  • Timing: The recall is expected to begin May 1, 2017. Owners can contact Mercedes customer service at 1-800-367-6372.

2016 Smart Fortwo

  • Number of vehicles affected: 2,213
  • Issue: The horizontal headlight adjustment mechanism may not have been properly sealed off to prevent future adjustment.
  • Remedy: Mercedes-Benz will notify owners, and dealers will install the correct sealing caps to prevent the headlights from being adjusted horizontally free of charge.
  • Timing: The manufacturer has not yet provided a notification date. Owners may contact Mercedes customer service at 1-800-367-6372.
