Recall Roundup: Following a Lull in Recalls, Hundreds of Thousands of Vehicles Headed Back to Dealers

By Jeff Youngs, June 11, 2013
The past few weeks have been relatively quiet with regard to recalls, but now multiple automakers are issuing notices covering hundreds of thousands of vehicles. The details are included below, listed in alphabetical order by vehicle manufacturer.

2013 Cadillac ATS Recall
General Motors is recalling a small number of 2013 Cadillac ATS, 2013 Cadillac XTS, and 2014 Chevrolet Impala vehicles because the brake lights may flash intermittently without the brake pedal applied and the cruise control may disengage.

If the brake lights flash without the brake pedal applied, motorists following the ATS, XTS, and Impala may presume that the brake lights produce a false alarm, and may not brake when these Cadillac and Chevrolet vehicles are actually slowing down, increasing the risk of a crash. To rectify the problem, dealers will reprogram the body control module in the affected vehicles.

Just 1,627 vehicles are impacted by this recall, which started on June 7, 2013. Owners can contact Cadillac at 1-866-982-2339 or Chevrolet at 1-800-630-2438 with questions, referencing National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) campaign number 13V220000 and GM recall number 13158.

2011-2013 Chevrolet Express CNG Recall
General Motors is recalling 1,791 units of the 2011-2013 Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana full-size vans equipped with a compressed natural gas fuel system supplied by IMPCO Technologies, Inc. The affected fuel systems were manufactured from February 14, 2011, through February 20, 2013, and have a fuel shut-off solenoid connector to the CNG tank that may corrode, form an electrical short, cause overheating, and increase the risk of a fire.

GM will replace the solenoid assemblies, fuel pump fuses, and adjust the routing for the wiring in order to resolve this problem. Timing for the recall has not been established, and owners can contact the GM Fleet Action Center at 1-800-353-3867. The NHTSA recall campaign number is 13V225000, GM's recall number is 13139, and IMPCO's recall number is FA13GM001.

2012 CODA Electric Vehicle Recall
Defunct electric car manufacturer CODA is recalling 117 units of its compact EV to fix a problem with the side curtain air bags. In the affected vehicles, the side curtain air bags may have been improperly rolled during production, which could cause the air bag to deploy in an unintended manner. This could increase the risk of occupant injury.

The NHTSA says this recall supersedes a previous recall conducted by CODA Automotive (12V-409). Owners will be notified of the new recall, and will need to take their vehicles to their original dealer to have the side curtain air bags replaced at no charge. The recall starts on June 11, 2013. The NHTSA recall campaign number is 13V229000, and the CODA Automotive recall campaign number is R84002.

2013 Ford Motor Company Vehicles Recall
Ford and Lincoln are recalling 390,783 vehicles to replace a fuel delivery module that may crack and leak fuel, increasing the risk for a fire in the presence of an ignition source. Dealers will replace the component at no charge to the customer, starting on July 15, 2013.

Models affected by this recall include:

Owners with questions can contact Ford at 1-866-436-7332. The NHTSA recall campaign number is 13V227000 and the Ford recall campaign number is 13S04.

2010-2012 Jeep Compass Recall
In 2010, 2011, and 2012 Jeep Compass and Jeep Patriot SUVs, a software error may lead to delayed deployment or non-deployment of the vehicles' seat belt pre-tensioners and/or side-impact air bags in a rollover accident. This condition can lead to an increased risk of injury in a crash.

To resolve the problem, Jeep dealers will correct the software problem at no cost to the vehicle owner. The total number of Compass and Patriot vehicles affected by the recall is 254,396, and corrections will be made in July of 2013. Owners with questions can contact Jeep at 1-800-247-9753, referencing NHTSA recall campaign number 13V233000 and Chrysler recall number N01.

2012-2013 Jeep Wrangler Recall
More than 180,000 Jeep Wranglers built from January 23, 2011, through February 23, 2013, are heading back to dealerships for repairs. In the affected vehicles, which are equipped with a 3.6-liter V-6 engine and an automatic transmission, the power steering line may contact the transmission oil cooler line. If the contact wears a hole in the transmission oil cooler line, transmission fluid will leak, the transmission may stop functioning, and increased risk for a crash will exist.

Jeep dealers will start fixing Wranglers in July of 2013. The remedy requires the replacement of the power steering return tube assembly, at no charge to the vehicle owner. The NHTSA recall campaign number for this action is 13V234000, and Chrysler's recall campaign number is N28. Wrangler owners with questions can contact Chrysler at 1-800-247-9753.

2010 Toyota Prius Recall
In certain 2010 model-year Lexus HS 250h and Toyota Prius vehicles, nitrogen gas from the brake booster pump assembly could leak into the brake fluid, resulting in reduced hydraulic pressure for the brake pedal. This condition could impact vehicle stopping distance, thereby increasing the risk of a crash. To remedy the problem, dealers will replace the brake booster pump assemblies, free of charge.

The number of vehicles being recalled totals 87,060. The Lexus models were built from June 19, 2009, through October 9, 2009. The Toyota models were built from March 31, 2009, through October 9, 2009. The recall is expected to begin in late July of 2013. Vehicle owners can contact Toyota by calling 1-800-331-4331. The NHTSA recall campaign number is 13V235.
