Recall Roundup: FJ Shines Too Brightly, GL Requires More Torque

By Jeff Youngs, May 06, 2013
This week, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recalls just two models. Please find them listed below, in alphabetical order.

2013 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class
Mercedes-Benz is asking owners of 272 units of the 2013 GL-Class--GL 350 BlueTec, GL450, GL550, GL63 AMG--to return their vehicles for a potential problem with the second-row seat belt anchor fitting bolts, which may not have been properly torqued during assembly. If the seat belt anchors loosen and a crash occurs, the second-row seat occupant may not be properly restrained, thereby increasing the risk of injury.

The affected vehicles were built between May 15, 2012, and October 4, 2012. Starting in May 2013, dealers will inspect and, if necessary, tighten the seat belt anchor fitting bolts. Owners with questions can contact Mercedes at 1-800-367-6372. The NHTSA campaign number is 13V166000.

2007-2013 Toyota FJ Cruiser
If you're driving a Toyota FJ Cruiser with a Toyota Auxiliary Driving Lamp Kit mounted to the front bumper, your SUV is in violation of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 108. In other words, when the FJ Cruiser is driven with this kit's 55-watt bulbs burning and the upper beam headlights illuminated, the combination is too bright and exceeds federal standards. As a result, the lights could cause excessive glare for oncoming motorists, increasing the risk of a crash.

The total number of FJ Cruisers affected by this recall numbers 11,489. To resolve the problem, Toyota dealers will replace the 55-watt bulbs with 35-watt bulbs, at no cost to the owner, beginning at the end of May 2013. Contact Toyota with questions by calling 1-800-331-4331, and reference NHTSA recall campaign number 13V163000.
