Recall Roundup: FCA Recalls Nearly 1.5 Million Ram Pickups for Brake Transmission Shift Interlock Malfunction

During the past week, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles US (FCA US) recalled 1,482,874 Ram pickup trucks from the 2009-2017 model years that are equipped with column shifters, due to issues with the brake transmission shift interlock (BTSI) pin. FCA has also recalled 16,900 Dodge Dakota pickup trucks from the 2005 model year. Volkswagen Group of America (VW), Maserati North America (Maserati), and Toyota Motor (Toyota) also issued recalls of light passenger vehicles.

2018 Alfa Romeo Giulia
2018 Alfa Romeo Stelvio
  • Number of vehicles affected: 307
  • Issue: The braking system may have been filled with contaminated brake fluid, possibly damaging the system and affecting its performance.
  • Remedy: Alfa Romeo will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the braking system, replacing it as necessary, free of charge.
  • Timing: The recall is expected to begin February 8, 2018. Owners may contact Alfa Romeo customer service at 1-844-253-2872.

2018 Audi A5 Coupe

  • Number of vehicles affected: 8,037
  • Issue: The affected vehicles were built with head curtain air bag assemblies that may not unfold properly.
  • Remedy: VW will notify owners, and dealers will modify the head curtain air bags so that they deploy properly free of charge.
  • Timing: The recall is expected to begin January 31, 2018. Owners may contact Audi customer service at 1-800-253-2834.

2005 Dodge Dakota

  • Number of vehicles affected: 16,900
  • Issue: The recall affects certain 2005 Dodge Dakota pickup trucks equipped with heated seats. These driver and passenger seats may develop hot spots that can result in the seat cushion or seat back having burn holes.
  • Remedy: FCA US will notify owners, and dealers will update the seat heating system control features free of charge.
  • Timing: The recall is expected to begin February 8, 2018. Owners may contact FCA US customer service at 1-800-853-1403.

  • Number of vehicles affected: 649
  • Issue: The affected vehicles include certain 2017-2018 Toyota 4Runner and Tundra; 2018 Toyota Highlander, RAV4, and Lexus GX460; and 2017 Toyota Sienna and Tacoma vehicles. These vehicles may have incorrect load carrying capacity labels.
  • Remedy: Toyota will notify owners and provide them with corrected labels free of charge.
  • Timing: The recall is expected to begin January 15, 2018. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331.

  • Issue: A fuel delivery pipe in the engine compartment may leak fuel at the connections.
  • Remedy: Maserati will notify owners, and dealers will install a new fuel delivery line kit free of charge.

2016-2017 Ram 3500 Cab Chassis (GVWR <10,000 lbs.)
2011-2017 Ram 3500, 4500, 5500 Cab Chassis

  • Number of vehicles affected: 1,482,874
  • Issue: The affected vehicles include certain 2016-2017 Ram 3500 Cab Chassis with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of less than 10,000 lbs.; 2011-2017 Ram 3500, 4500, and 5500 Cab Chassis vehicles; 2009-2017 Ram 1500; and 2010-2017 Ram 2500 and 3500 pickup trucks, all equipped with a column shifter. Pushing the brake pedal for prolonged periods when the vehicle is running and in “Park” may cause the brake transmission shift interlock (BTSI) pin to stick in the open position. With the pin in the open position, the transmission can be shifted out of Park into any gear without pushing the brake pedal or having the key in the ignition.
  • Remedy: The remedy for this recall is still under development.
