Recall Roundup: Cruze Models Recalled for Stopping Problem, Fiat EVs and Kia Sorentos Heading Back to Dealers

By Jeff Youngs, August 27, 2013
The big recall news of the past week pertains to hundreds of thousands of Chevy Cruze vehicles that need to have a braking problem corrected. Otherwise, a couple of comparatively small recalls impact the new Fiat 500e electric car and the 2014 Kia Sorento.

2011-2012 Chevrolet Cruze
Chevrolet is recalling 292,879 units of the 2011 and 2012 Cruze sedan that are equipped with the turbocharged, 1.4-liter 4-cylinder engine and 6-speed automatic transmission.

When equipped with an electric vacuum pump, which is designed to provide supplemental vacuum for braking assistance, the pump may not operate, leading to an intermittent reduction in or loss of brake assist. When this occurs, the driver must apply additional braking force or allow for extra distance to bring the Cruze to a stop, which increases the possibility of a crash.

The schedule for this recall has not been determined as this article is written. General Motors is notifying vehicle owners, and dealers will resolve the problem by installing a microswitch in the power brake vacuum pipe assembly, at no cost to the vehicle owner.

Owners with questions can contact Chevrolet at 1-800-222-1020, referencing GM recall number 12213 or National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recall campaign ID number 13V360.

2013 Fiat 500e
The Fiat 500e is an electric vehicle based on the standard Fiat 500. In 491 vehicles built between December 16, 2012, and August 13, 2013, the half-shaft joints could loosen and separate, causing noise and a loss of driving capability, which could lead to an increased likelihood of a crash.

Starting in August of 2013, Fiat dealers will replace the fasteners attaching the half shaft inboard joints at no cost to the customer. Owners with questions can contact Fiat at 1-888-242-6342, referencing Chrysler recall number N51 and NHTSA recall campaign ID number 13V358.

2014 Kia Sorento
Kia is recalling 9,345 units of the 2014 Sorento crossover SUV, vehicles equipped with a 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine and front-wheel drive. In the affected vehicles, which were built from January 7, 2013, to March 12, 2013, the right front axle shaft may fracture, causing a loss of power to the wheels or the potential for the vehicle to roll away when in Park.

Starting in September of 2013, dealers will replace the front axle shaft assembly at no cost to the customer. Owners with questions may contact Kia at 1-800-333-4542, referencing Kia recall number SC099 and NHTSA recall campaign ID number 13V356.
